In his new memoir, Michael J. Fox claimed that his \u201cBack to the Future\u201d co-star Crispin Glover\u2019s on-set behavior caused \u201ctension\u201d with director Robert Zemeckis and screenwriter Bob Gale.<\/p>\n
\u201cNobody puts Crispin in a box. But that didn\u2019t prevent the camera crew from literally building a box around him,\u201d Fox, 64, wrote in \u201cFuture Boy: Back to the Future and My Journey Through the Space-Time Continuum.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cAs George McFly, Crispin had his own ideas as to how and where his character should move,\u201d the \u201cFamily Ties\u201d actor added.<\/p>\n
Fox, who played Glover\u2019s on-screen son, Marty McFly, in the iconic 1985 movie, recalled an incident during filming where Glover\u2019s unpredictable nature was on full display.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs Crispin approached the camera, he was meant to stay in a lane between the clothesline and me. But Crispin had a different plan,\u201d Fox shared. \u201cMy guess is that he saw George as a wanderer, a free spirit who traveled in random patterns \u2014 in this case, perpendicular to the camera.\u201d<\/p>\n
After Glover, 61, repeatedly wanders out of the frame, the crew \u201cfabricated a miniature corral made of sandbags and C-stands, trapping Crispin into adhering to the parameters of the shot,\u201d Fox claimed.<\/p>\n
But Fox still insisted that he \u201cloved working\u201d with Glover.<\/p>\n
\u201cHis talent was unquestionable, although his methods sometimes created friction,\u201d Fox said. \u201cStill, I respected how he remained true to George (as he understood and embodied him).\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI knew Crispin Glover prior to \u2018Back to the Future,’\u201d Fox continued. \u201cI wouldn\u2019t, however, say I was prepared to act with him \u2014 there\u2019s no way to prepare for Crispin. With Chris Lloyd, I had an inkling of what he was up to. Neither he nor Crispin ever did the same thing the same way twice.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Post has reached out to Glover\u2019s rep for comment.<\/p>\n
Elsewhere in his book, Fox \u2014 who has been battling Parkinson\u2019s disease since 1991 \u2014 revealed what went down when he finally met Eric Stoltz after replacing him as the lead star in \u201cBack to the Future.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cEric has maintained his silence on the subject for forty years, so I was prepared for the likelihood that he\u2019d prefer to keep it that way,\u201d Fox wrote, revealing that he wrote a letter to Stoltz, 64, and asked for a meeting.\u201cIf your answer is \u2018piss off and leave me alone\u2019 \u2026 that works, too,\u201d Fox\u2019s letter said.<\/p>\n
But Stoltz ended up having a \u201cbeautifully written reply\u201d in which he \u201cwas thoughtful about my outreach, and although he respectfully declined to participate in the book, he seemed open to the idea of getting together,\u201d Fox recalled.<\/p>\n
The two actors met at Fox\u2019s New York home and \u201cimmediately fell into an easy dialogue about our careers, families and yes, our own trips through the space-time continuum.\u201d<\/p>\n
Fox said they also \u201cquickly acknowledged that neither of us had an issue with the other. What transpired on \u2018Back to the Future\u2019 had not made us enemies or fated rivals; we were just two dedicated actors who had poured equal amounts of energy into the same role.<\/p>\n
The rest had nothing to do with us. As it turned out, we had much more in common than our spin as Marty.\u201d<\/p>\n
Stoltz was initially cast as the time traveler Marty McFly but was fired by the director shortly after filming began.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt was devastating to me,\u201d Stoltz said in a 1993 interview with Bob Costas. \u201cIt was probably the worst thing that can happen to you in your career.\u201d<\/p>\n
Fox joined the cast, which added an estimated $3 million to $4 million to the movie\u2019s budget. He also had to film \u201cFamily Ties\u201d at the same time, which created a grueling schedule.<\/p>\n
