Tame Impala<\/a> has responded to critics claiming he\u2019s gone \u201ccommercial\u201d with his new music to \u201cmake money\u201d.<\/p>\n

The Australian multi-instrumentalist, also known as Kevin Parker, is dropping his fifth studio album \u2018Deadbeat\u2019<\/a>\u00a0tomorrow (October 17) \u2013 and ahead of his album, he spoke to Zane Lowe about the idea that he was making music to simply make money. \u201cIn an interview, someone asked me what I thought about the idea that fans think that I\u2019ve turned my focus to commercial \u2013 or whatever is gonna sell,\u201d he began. \u201cIf I didn\u2019t care about the music anymore and I just wanted to make money and sell albums, the way you would know that is if I just did the same thing again.<\/p>\n

\u201cI would know exactly what\u2019s gonna happen,\u201d Parker continued. \u201cI\u2019d know what radio stations are gonna play it, I\u2019d know how it\u2019s gonna perform, who\u2019s gonna like it, what demographics or whatever \u2013 it would all be so planned out for me.\u201d<\/p>\n

He went on to claim that \u201cmaking a bunch of \u2018Elephant\u2019 re-dos would\u2019ve got me on every car commercial in America\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Parker also said that releasing his seminal album \u2018Currents\u2019 in 2015 felt \u201crisky\u201d at the time, explaining: \u201cThe whole album, there weren\u2019t many guitars on it, I was using drum machines, it was electronic in some parts, electro in some parts\u2026 any time I decide not to do the same thing again, it\u2019s unknown. And it\u2019s scary and all that kind of shit, but I remind myself that I would far rather it this way than the way where I know it\u2019s planned out ahead of me.<\/p>\n

\u201cI would just feel defeated if I decided to do the same thing again \u2013 if I decided that I wanna go down the path of knowing what\u2019s gonna happen, I want control and I want predictability,\u201d Parker added. \u201cIf I did that, that\u2019s how you would know I\u2019ve given up as an artist.\u201d<\/p>\n

He concluded, laughing: \u201cWell, I mean\u2026 if I do, it\u2019s \u2019cause I felt like it. It\u2019s because you\u2019re expecting me to not do the thing that I [do].\u201d<\/p>\n

Earlier in the chat, Parker revealed that hits like \u2018Elephant\u2019 nearly didn\u2019t make \u2018Lonerism\u2019<\/a>.<\/p>\n

When asked by Lowe about songs that \u201cscraped\u201d themselves onto the album, Parker told Lowe: \u201cEvery song\u2026 every single song has been deliberated over. I\u2019ve loved it and hated it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2018New Person, Same Ol\u2019 Mistakes\u2019 almost didn\u2019t make the album,\u201d he continued. \u201cA bunch of songs \u2013 \u2018Elephant\u2019 almost didn\u2019t make the album. Every artist has those stories.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2018Elephant\u2019 would go on to become a classic staple in Tame Impala\u2019s sets, while, \u2018New Person, Same Ol\u2019 Mistakes\u2019 from \u2018Currents\u2019 would be covered by Rihanna<\/a>\u00a0on her album \u2018ANTI\u2019 in 2016 \u2013\u00a0which Parker would later say he \u201cloved\u201d<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Tame Impala will set off for a huge US<\/a>, UK and European tour<\/a> starting in October.<\/p>\n

Parker will then commence his UK and Europe leg in April 2026, where he\u2019ll land in London to start his run of UK dates at the O2 Arena on May 7. He\u2019ll later visit Manchester (8), Birmingham (9) and Glasgow (11) before finishing off with a final show at Dublin\u2019s 3Arena (13).<\/p>\n
