{"id":217715,"date":"2025-10-16T16:38:08","date_gmt":"2025-10-16T16:38:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/217715\/"},"modified":"2025-10-16T16:38:08","modified_gmt":"2025-10-16T16:38:08","slug":"ottawa-to-proceed-with-promised-bail-reform-legislation-next-week","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/217715\/","title":{"rendered":"Ottawa to proceed with promised bail reform legislation next week"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a style=\"display:block\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/resizer\/v2\/ZMJPFM4ERJCU5MYEUI7NU4DBWA.jpg?auth=11e7dce16d619a02f6617f7fbd1e2635e7433552233f4759dfc2135dbcd0cff0&amp;width=600&amp;height=400&amp;quality=80&amp;smart=true\" aria-haspopup=\"true\" data-photo-viewer-index=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Open this photo in gallery:<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"figcap-text\">Prime Minister Mark Carney said the proposed amendments are related to bail for those accused of serious and violent crimes.DARRYL DYCK\/The Canadian Press<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Prime Minister <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/topics\/mark-carney\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/topics\/mark-carney\/\">Mark Carney\u2019s<\/a> government will move ahead with promised bail reforms next week, through new legislation amending the Criminal Code. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Mr. Carney made the announcement Thursday, saying the proposed amendments are related to bail for those accused of serious and violent crimes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Premiers, police and families of crime victims have been calling for changes to the criminal justice system for years, arguing that the current rules around bail act as a revolving door for repeat offenders.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The amendments will include allowing for consecutive sentencing and restricting conditional sentences for some sexual offences, plus new penalties for organized retail theft. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text mv-16 l-inset text-pb-8\" data-sophi-feature=\"interstitial\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/canada\/article-conservatives-bill-bail-reform-pierre-poilievre\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Conservatives will introduce a bail reform bill this fall, Poilievre says<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The government will also introduce what\u2019s known as \u201creverse-onus bail\u201d for more crimes. That\u2019s the practice of requiring an accused to demonstrate they should be released from custody, as opposed to the prosecution being required to make the case as to why they should remain. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cIn Canada, you should be able to wake up, get in your car, drive to work, come home and sleep soundly at night,\u201d Mr. Carney said in a press release. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cWhen laws repeatedly fail to protect those basic rights, we need new laws.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text mv-16 l-inset text-pb-8\" data-sophi-feature=\"interstitial\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/canada\/toronto\/article-toronto-crime-public-safety\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Opinion: It\u2019s time for visible action on crime<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Conservative Leader <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/topics\/pierre-poilievre\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/topics\/pierre-poilievre\/\">Pierre Poilievre<\/a> has made bail reform a centrepiece of his agenda.
