PayPal and its mobile-payment app Venmo were down for thousands of users on Thursday morning, according to user reports<\/a> on Downdetector<\/a>, but the issue has since been resolved, a spokesperson for the company said.<\/p>\n Users reported issues logging in to the popular mobile payment app.<\/p>\n SOPA Images\/LightRocket via Getty ImagesKey Facts<\/p>\n Outage reports peaked for Venmo around 11:50 a.m. EDT with over 8,300 users on Downdetector noting issues, but outage reports dropped sharply in the early afternoon. <\/p>\n Users reported issues accessing the app and logging in, according to the site.<\/p>\n Paypal outages peaked with nearly 10,000 reports just after 12 p.m. EDT, before reports quickly plummeted.<\/p>\n Both apps \u201cexperienced a brief service disruption that has since been resolved,\u201d Caitlin Girouard, a spokesperson for PayPal, told Forbes in a statement.<\/p>\n Key Background<\/p>\n PayPal was founded in 1998 as a financial technology firm, and quickly grew to become one of the largest and most influential fintech companies in Silicon Valley. The company says<\/a> it has 434 million active accounts, and processed 26 billion transactions in 2024. PayPal purchased Venmo, the popular mobile payment app, in 2013.
