Popular Balcatta bakery Dough Street has made the regrettable decision to close its doors temporarily due to a \u201cmystery illness\u201d suffered by co-owner, Mel.<\/p>\n

The gluten free bakery \u2014 which opened to the public in mid-2024 \u2014 announced on Thursday night that \u201cnothing matters more than Mel\u2019s health\u201d as it shut up shop for the foreseeable future.<\/p>\n

Co-owner Nathan shared a photo to social media of Mel laying in a hospital bed as she received medical attention, with his hand resting on hers.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m sorry to let you know that Dough Street will be closed tomorrow and likely for the rest of the weekend,\u201d he told followers.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is not a decision I make lightly. Mel is currently in hospital with a mystery illness, and despite the best efforts of multiple medical teams, we still don\u2019t have clear answers.<\/p>\n

\u201cRight now, my priority has to be by her side \u2014 advocating for her and supporting her through this.<\/p>\n

\u201cDough Street means the world to us, but nothing matters more than Mel\u2019s health.\u201d<\/p>\n

The pair have been treating locals to their delectable creations for 14 months, both sweet and savoury, and regularly see their Jones Street dwelling filled to the brim.<\/p>\n

Their products are entirely gluten free, with Mel being gluten intolerant and Nathan suffering from coeliac disease.<\/p>\n

Nathan asked customers to send their well-wishes, and to advise others hoping for a weekend coffee and sweet treat that the shop would likely not be open.<\/p>\n

\u201cPlease send your love and prayers for her recovery,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

And the community has spoken, offering words of support through the pair\u2019s difficult time.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo sorry to hear! I hope Mel is ok very soon \u2764\ufe0f\u201d, one person responded.<\/p>\n

Another said, \u201cMel and Nathan stay strong you got this \ud83d\udcaa\ud83d\udcaa\ud83d\udcaa\ud83d\udcaa praying for answers and speedy recovery \ud83d\ude4f\ud83d\ude4f\ud83d\ude4f\ud83d\ude4f\u201d.<\/p>\n

In May, the duo offered an insight into their journey to date as they marked 12 months of operation.<\/p>\n

Spending years devoting their lives to developing their signature products, the pair said they had run out of money by the time they had mastered their craft, and were forced to undergo much of Dough Street\u2019s fit-out themselves.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo blueprint. No architect. No tradies. Just a vision that we shaped and reshaped until it felt right,\u201d they said.<\/p>\n

The owners said they were pushed to their limits in the early stages, but the vindication for their hard work is present each day upon seeing the enjoyment written on customers\u2019 faces.<\/p>\n

Now, they\u2019re very proud of the place they\u2019ve created for themselves in the neighbourhood.<\/p>\n
