When he got up and tried to test his leg down the first-base line, those cheers turned to boos.

“It’s bull—-,” Ernie Clement said in the visitors’ clubhouse following the Blue Jays’ 6-2 loss to the Seattle Mariners in Game 5 of American League Championship Series.

“I don’t know how you boo somebody who was down on the ground. I don’t understand that. I’ve had a lot of respect for all the Mariners fans, especially the ones I’ve talked to throughout the series. I think they’ve been awesome.

“But that was pretty classless.”

Added Myles Straw: “There’s no room for that. How would those guys like it if they got hit by 95 in the kneecap and we cheered for that? It’s bull crap. I would love to see one of those fans take 96 anywhere and laugh at those guys and see how they feel about it. It’s not a good feeling.”

The three ALCS games in Seattle this week featured energetic, sellout crowds that were rightfully celebrating a Mariners team that has captivated a city that’s never played host to a World Series game. Springer, a former member of the AL West-rival Astros, was the constant subject of intense boos that likely stemmed from his involvement in Houston’s illegal sign-stealing scandal in 2017.

Blue Jays’ manager John Schneider acknowledged the “awesome atmosphere” at the Seattle ballpark but voiced his displeasure with the fans’ treatment of Springer after he was hit by the Bryan Woo pitch in the seventh inning on Friday.

“I think the fans that were booing him should take a look in the mirror and understand what kind of player he is, and, I’ll stop there,” Schneider said unprompted. “Because when a guy gets hit in the knee and is in obvious pain and you have 40,000 people cheering, not the right thing to do.”

Springer, meanwhile, underwent X-Rays that came back negative. He has a right knee contusion, according to Schneider, and will likely undergo more testing when the club arrives in Toronto.

“George is about as tough as they come,” said the manager. “I think he’ll have to really, really be hurting to not be in the lineup on Sunday.”

Springer, of course, has enjoyed a renaissance 2025 campaign. The 36-year-old hit 32 home runs during the regular season and finished third in MLB with a .959 OPS that trailed only Shohei Ohtani (1.014) and Aaron Judge (1.145). Springer carried that success into the playoffs, tallying three homers, five doubles, six RBIs and a .933 OPS across nine October games.

His fifth-inning double on Friday off Mariners’ reliever Matt Brash tied the game before the Blue Jays eventually lost, putting the club on the brink of elimination, down 3-2 in the ALCS.

The two clubs will travel to Toronto for a workout day at Rogers Centre on Saturday before the series resumes Sunday night.

It goes without saying that a Blue Jays’ lineup without Springer, its galvanizing leadoff hitter, would be at a severe disadvantage.

“We already had a tough blow with losing Bo [Bichette],” said Straw. “George is obviously one of our superstars and he has been all season, so I’m just hoping he’s going to be Okay. To see him get on his feet was a good sign. Obviously saw him limping and it’s going to hurt and be sore probably for a while.

“But George is tough,” continued Straw. “He’s dealt with a lot of stuff this year as far as just a lot of different injuries and tends to play through some things like that. So, I think hopefully there’s a good chance we’ll see him in Game 6. Just praying for the best with his recovery and what the imaging or whatever is going to look like.”

[435
49,48,462,82
0":"post-221380","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-mlb","8":"tag-ca","9":"tag-canada","10":"tag-mlb","11":"tag-sports
["GET
