Ben Stiller\u2019s adult children are calling him out for being an absent dad in his new documentary.<\/p>\n
In \u201cStiller & Meara: Nothing Is Lost,\u201d out Friday, the actor spoke to son Quinlin, 20, about a frank conversation he had with daughter Ella, 23, regarding his parenting mistakes, per Us Weekly<\/a>.<\/p>\n Ella told the \u201cZoolander\u201d star, \u201cI literally can\u2019t ever remember you being around when I was growing up.\u201d<\/p>\n Ben Stiller\u2019s kids called him out for \u201cnot ever\u201d being around growing up in the actor\u2019s new documentary. FilmMagic<\/p>\n The Emmy winner\u2019s daughter, Ella, told her dad so in \u201cStiller & Meara: Nothing Is Lost.\u201d Getty Images for InStyle<\/p>\n The comedian asked Quinlin whether Ella\u2019s statement \u201cresonate[d]\u201d with him, to which his son explained that parenting had appeared to come \u201clast\u201d on Stiller\u2019s list of priorities in the past.<\/p>\n \u201cAfter a tough day, or if something was going wrong, you can kind of get into your own head and when you get into that place, it\u2019s hard to get you out of it,\u201d Quinlin explained. \u201cSo that would kind of put a damper on the fun part of being on vacation.<\/p>\n \u201cYou have all these hats that you\u2019re trying to balance, you know?\u201d he continued. \u201cBeing a director, an actor, a producer, a writer. But also just, like, a father.\u201d<\/p>\n Son Quinlin agreed that the statement \u201cmaybe\u201d did \u201cresonate\u201d with him. Getty Images<\/p>\n The duo recalled Quinlin being sad over Stiller leaving for months to film a \u201cNight at the Museum\u201d movie. Getty Images for FLC<\/p>\n Stiller thought he had been \u201cdoing so much better than\u201d at raising his children than dad Jerry Stiller \u2014 also an actor \u2014 but has since realized that wasn\u2019t the case.<\/p>\n \u201cI thought I was pulling it off,\u201d Ben said in the documentary. \u201cI was flying home on weekends and finding special places for the kids to play when they would visit the set. But in reality, just hearing them talk about it, for them, it was the same thing I was going through as a kid and I just couldn\u2019t see that at all.\u201d<\/p>\n He told Quinlin, \u201cYou always feel like growing up you\u2019re not going to make the mistakes your parents made. And then you make different mistakes, or some of the same mistakes.\u201d<\/p>\n Quinlin, in turn, got real about \u201cfrustrated\u201d he feels about Stiller\u2019s fame, citing an incident \u201ca few weeks\u201d prior during which a fan asked for a photo during a dinner when he was \u201cstressed about college stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n The \u201cZoolander\u201d star shares his kids with wife Christine Taylor. FilmMagic<\/p>\n Quinlin fumed, \u201cLike, \u2018The world just has to stop to get this picture.’\u201d<\/p>\n While recently chatting with The Sunday Times about the vulnerable project, Stiller confessed, \u201cI probably f\u2013ked up more with my kids<\/a> than my parents did with us.\u201d<\/p>\n The filmmaker and his wife, Christine Taylor, became parents when Ella arrived in 2002, welcoming Quinlin three years later.<\/p>\n The couple have been married since 2000 but did briefly separate in 2017<\/a> only to reconnect during their COVID-19 quarantine<\/a>.<\/p>\n Stiller married Taylor in 2000.
