{"id":22251,"date":"2025-07-25T04:49:10","date_gmt":"2025-07-25T04:49:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/22251\/"},"modified":"2025-07-25T04:49:10","modified_gmt":"2025-07-25T04:49:10","slug":"canadian-home-prices-could-drop-2-from-trump-trade-war-cmhc-says-national","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/22251\/","title":{"rendered":"Canadian home prices could drop 2% from Trump trade war, CMHC says &#8211; National"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>U.S. President <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/donald-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Donald Trump<\/a>\u2019s trade war will continue to hit Canada\u2019s housing market, with a recovery in prices unlikely until 2026, a new report from the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation said on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/1753129028_943_70c8fc80.png\" alt=\"\" style=\"position:absolute;width:1px;height:1px\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cCanada\u2019s housing market will continue to cool in 2025 due to trade tensions, economic uncertainty, slower population growth and increasing unemployment. <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/home-prices\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Home prices<\/a> are expected to fall around 2%,\u201d the CMHC\u2019s summer housing market outlook said.<\/p>\n<p>The largest drops in home prices will be in Ontario and British Columbia, which are both home to some of Canada\u2019s most expensive housing markets.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTrade tensions and slower population growth are contributing to a likely modest recession in 2025, dampening business and consumer confidence and slowing housing activity,\u201d the report said.<\/p>\n<p>Homebuyers and developers alike will continue to take the \u201cwait-and-see\u201d approach to the housing market amid the impact of the tariffs and economic uncertainty, it added.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAffordability remains a major issue and new construction is slowing. A gradual recovery is only expected to begin by 2026.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>The CMHC said the negative impact from trade tariffs will \u201cpeak in the second half of 2025\u201d but will begin to abate by 2026, along with the Canadian GDP.
