A school has opened in Newark<\/a>, New Jersey, which is among the first in the state to \u201cprepare high school<\/a> students for careers in the building industry.\u201d Named the Newark School of Architecture & Interior Design, the initiative is a partnership between the Newark Public Schools and Pratt Institute<\/a>, with Pratt faculty collaborating with district educators to create a curriculum introducing students to architecture, interior design, and construction skills.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The design of the school itself features a five-story, glass-enclosed stairwell that captures views over Newark\u2019s Ironbound district. In addition to studio-based learning, the school will host a \u201cSurvey of Trades\u201d course offering instruction in plumbing, electrical, and HVAC systems.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are proud to partner and launch the Newark School of Architecture & Interior Design, bringing Pratt Institute\u2019s world-renowned expertise to expand youth access to the creative disciplines through the public school system,\u201d said Pratt President Frances Bronet. \u201cThis partnership builds on our long history of creating cradle-through-career pathways for young people, from the opening of our Saturday Art School program in 1897 to our more recent collaboration with Bank Street College of Education and the New York City\u2019s Department of Education to found Design Works High School.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
