President Donald Trump attempted to lower the temperature in the U.S.-China trade war as both sides wrangle over tariffs and export controls.<\/p>\n

In an interview with Fox News\u2019 Sunday Morning Futures<\/a>, he also mixed in some flattery for Chinese President Xi Jinping while still airing some grievances.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not looking to destroy China,\u201d\u00a0Trump said.<\/p>\n

Earlier this month, he\u00a0announced an\u00a0additional 100% tariff and software restrictions<\/a>\u00a0on China, which has a stranglehold on the world\u2019s supply of rare earths and imposed tighter export controls that threaten a wide range of industries.<\/p>\n

\u201cNow they\u2019ve forced me to charge them what is the equivalent of 155 to 157%,\u201d Trump told Fox<\/a>.<\/p>\n

His tone contrasts with more ominous rhetoric in August, when he said the U.S. holds the upper hand versus China.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey have some cards. We have incredible cards. But I don\u2019t want to play those cards. If I did, that would destroy China,\u201d Trump told reporters<\/a>, adding \u201cI\u2019m not going to play those cards.\u201d<\/p>\n

In fact, analysts have noted other ways that the U.S. could target China\u2019s economy<\/a> beyond tariffs. In a recent note, Capital Economics pointed to the commercial aviation supply chain, software exports, and U.S. dominance of global financial infrastructure, among other things.<\/p>\n

Markets have been whipsawed by the latest round of escalation and de-escalation in the U.S.-China trade war. After stocks tumbled when Trump announced the new 100% tariff, they rebounded sharply after he said \u201cDon\u2019t worry about China\u201d and vowed that everything will be fine.<\/p>\n

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is due to meet Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng this week to continue talks ahead of a meeting between Trump and Xi at the end of this month on the sidelines of a regional economic summit in South Korea.<\/p>\n

In Trump\u2019s latest Fox interview, he said China is \u201calways looking for an edge\u201d and has \u201cripped off our country for years.\u201d\u00a0He also reiterated that triple-digit tariffs on China aren\u2019t sustainable and touted his positive relationship with Xi.<\/p>\n

\u201cI get along great with him. He\u2019s a very strong leader a very, you know, amazing man,\u201d he added. \u201cAnd you look at what he\u2019s done and \u2026 his life is an amazing story. It\u2019s a story for a great movie.
