According to Meltzer, Cole was cleared to compete as late as Friday night. Then everything changed overnight.<\/p>\n\u201cSo what happened is, again, it\u2019s like\u2014I don\u2019t know that it\u2019s a concussion, but what happened to him would lead one to believe it was a concussion, OK? But I don\u2019t know that. Like, look, Friday night he was still doing the match. And it wasn\u2019t like it was touch and go. You know, maybe yes, maybe no. I mean, if he was diagnosed with a concussion Friday night, he\u2019s not doing the match. That\u2019s just reality. They\u2019re not going to let anyone\u2014especially with his history\u2014go out there. Absolutely not.\u201d<\/p>\n
Meltzer said Cole woke up Saturday feeling symptoms that made it impossible to wrestle, and there was no internal debate about whether he\u2019d perform.<\/p>\n
\u201cSaturday morning, he woke up and something had happened. And it was just like\u2014he can\u2019t do the match. And he needs to take time off. And it wasn\u2019t a debate. It wasn\u2019t his call. It wasn\u2019t Tony saying, \u2018Can you just go through and drop the title?\u2019 It was like, no. It was a no.\u201d<\/p>\n
Both Cole and Tony Khan were visibly shaken during the post-show media appearance. Meltzer added:<\/p>\n
\u201cTony\u2019s reaction, as best I could tell, was\u2014he was really shaken up. And Adam was shaken up. You could tell from the interview. I think what he said was that he doesn\u2019t want to make a rash decision or anything, but it was a scary situation.\u201d<\/p>\n
With no firm timeline and no backstage involvement, Adam Cole\u2019s role in AEW is effectively frozen. While Khan\u2019s loyalty may keep him employed, it\u2019s unclear what the future holds\u2014especially if his recovery continues at this pace.<\/p>\n
