(Finn Gomez &amp; Paul Henderson via SWNS)<\/p>\n<p>                                    By Talker<\/p>\n<p>By Stephen Beech<\/p>\n<p>A major discovery has paved the way for a <a href=\"https:\/\/talker.news\/2023\/04\/17\/breakthrough-brings-scientists-step-closer-to-birth-control-pill-for-men\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">male contraceptive pill<\/a>, say scientists.<\/p>\n<p>The molecular \u201cswitch\u201d that &#8220;supercharges&#8221; sperm for their final sprint to an egg has been pinpointed by American researchers.<\/p>\n<p>They say their findings could &#8220;reshape&#8221; infertility treatments and opened the door to safe, non-hormonal <a href=\"https:\/\/talker.news\/2022\/09\/12\/pill-that-boosts-mens-fertility-could-be-coming-soon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">male contraceptives<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Study senior author Dr. Melanie Balbach said: &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/talker.news\/2023\/02\/14\/contraceptive-pills-for-men-developed-and-can-be-taken-just-before-sex\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Sperm metabolism<\/a> is special since it\u2019s only focused on generating more energy to achieve a single goal: fertilisation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>She explained that, before ejaculation, mammalian sperm rest in a low-energy state.<\/p>\n<p>Afterwards, as they swim through the female reproductive tract, they undergo a series of changes that ultimately help them reach and fertlize an egg.<\/p>\n<p>                        <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/png;base64,iVBORw0KGgoAAAANSUhEUgAAAAQAAAADCAQAAAAe\/WZNAAAAEElEQVR42mM8U88ABowYDABAxQPltt5zqAAAAABJRU5ErkJggg==\" alt=\"pexels-yankrukov-5217155\" class=\"img-responsive lazyload full white\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" data- data-\/><\/p>\n<p>(Photo by Yan Krukau via Pexels)<\/p>\n<p>These include swimming with quick, vigorous movements, as well as a change to the membranes that will encounter an egg.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Balbach, an Assistant Professor in the department of biochemistry and molecular biology at <a href=\"https:\/\/msu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Michigan State University<\/a>, said: \u201cMany types of cells undergo this rapid switch from low to high energy states, and sperm are an ideal way to study such metabolic reprogramming.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>She says metabolism is similarly essential for sperm function, and while scientists knew that behavioural changes before fertilisation required a large amount of energy, they weren\u2019t sure how sperm adjusted to meet the demand \u2014 until now.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Balbach\u2019s team created a special technique that allowed them to track the metabolism of glucose, which sperm take up from their environment and use as a sort of fuel.<\/p>\n<p>By tracing the chemical journey of <a href=\"https:\/\/talker.news\/2022\/09\/16\/which-birth-control-pills-are-safest-for-overweight-women\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">glucose within sperm<\/a>, they observed &#8220;key differences&#8221; between dormant and active specimens.<\/p>\n<p>                        <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/png;base64,iVBORw0KGgoAAAANSUhEUgAAAAQAAAADCAQAAAAe\/WZNAAAAEElEQVR42mM8U88ABowYDABAxQPltt5zqAAAAABJRU5ErkJggg==\" alt=\"Major discovery &#x201C;paves way for male contraceptive pill&#x201D;\" class=\"img-responsive lazyload full white\" width=\"799\" height=\"533\" data- data-\/><\/p>\n<p>Graduate student Nikki Deiro (L) and Balbach run samples at MSU&#8217;s Mass Spectrometry and Metabolomics Core.
