Here\u2019s what to know:<\/p>\n<p>What happened in cougar attack at Olympic National Park?<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">On Sunday, July 20, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/olym\/learn\/news\/mountain-lion-injures-child-in-olympic-national-park-rangers-seek-witnesses.htm\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:mountain lion attacked a 4-year-old child;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">mountain lion attacked a 4-year-old child<\/a> near the Victoria Overlook area on Hurricane Ridge in Olympic National Park, the NPS said in a Monday, July 21 news release.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/olym\/index.htm\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Olympic National Park;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Olympic National Park<\/a> in northwest Washington encompasses nearly a million acres of land, including \u201cglacier-capped mountains, old-growth temperate rain forests and over 70 miles of wild coastline,\u201d the NPS says on its website.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The wild cat, which was wearing a tracking collar, bit the child while they were \u201cwalking with their family on a popular trail,\u201d the federal parks agency said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cPark staff located and dispatched the animal\u201d the following day, the NPS said in the release. \u201cThere are no current threats to the public.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><a href=\"https:\/\/mountainlion.org\/2024\/04\/06\/risk-and-recreation\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Mountain lion attacks on humans;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Mountain lion attacks on humans<\/a> are \u201cincredibly rare,\u201d according to the Mountain Lion Foundation. The nonprofit conservation group said there have been just 29 cases of fatal mountain lion attacks involving people in North America since 1868.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Only two people have died from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sierraclub.org\/sierra\/fatal-washington-mountain-lion-attack-postmortem\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:cougar attacks in Washington state;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">cougar attacks in Washington state<\/a> in the past century or so, Sierra magazine reported in 2018.<\/p>\n<p>What do cougars look like?<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Cougars, also known as <a href=\"https:\/\/wdfw.wa.gov\/species-habitats\/species\/puma-concolor#desc-range\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:mountain lions or pumas;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">mountain lions or pumas<\/a>, are \u201csleek and graceful\u201d predators known for their \u201cstrength, agility and awesome ability to jump,\u201d according to the Washington Department of Fish &amp; Wildlife.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/wdfw.wa.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/2019-03\/Cougar%20Brochure.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:big cats;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">big cats<\/a> vary in color from reddish-brown to tawny to gray, sporting black tips on their long, ropy tails, the state wildlife agency said on its website.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Cougar kittens sport spots until they turn 4 or 5 months old.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Cougars are considerably bigger than other members of the cat family found in Washington state, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/wdfw.wa.gov\/species-habitats\/species\/lynx-rufus\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:bobcats;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">bobcats<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/wdfw.wa.gov\/species-habitats\/species\/lynx-canadensis\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Canada lynx;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Canada lynx<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Adult male cougars can weigh up to 180 pounds and measure 7 to 8 feet long \u201cfrom nose to tip of tail,\u201d the Washington Fish &amp; Wildlife Department said, while female mountain lions rarely weigh more than 110 pounds.<\/p>\n<p>How common are mountain lions in Washington state?<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">According to the Washington Department of Fish &amp; Wildlife, cougars be found throughout Washington state wherever \u201csuitable cover and prey are found.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cCougars use steep canyons, rock outcroppings and boulders or vegetation such as dense brush and forests to remain hidden while hunting,\u201d the agency said, with male mountain lions covering a range of 50 to 150 square miles to find food.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Although it doesn\u2019t regularly monitor or count cougar numbers, the Washington Department of Fish &amp; Wildlife estimates there are approximately 2,400 adult or nearly adult cougars living in the state.<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s the best way to prevent a cougar attack?<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">According to the Mountain Lion Foundation, the best way to prevent encounters with cougars is to keep them away from your property.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cThe best thing to do is to keep a barrier between you and the wildlife,\u201d the nonprofit said. \u201cBy doing so, you will save your pets and livestock from becoming dinner and help keep (cougars) out of trouble &#8230;\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The Mountain Lion Foundation recommends bringing your pets indoors \u201cwhenever possible,\u201d especially at night.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cCougars are most active from dusk to dawn,\u201d the Washington Department of Fish &amp; Wild life said, although it\u2019s \u201cnot unusual\u201d for the wild cats to go hunting during the day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">You should also secure your livestock at night in a \u201cfully enclosed structure\u201d such as a shed or barn, the Mountain Lion Foundation said, adding that tall fences and specially trained guard dogs can also keep cougars at bay.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">You should <a href=\"https:\/\/nrm.dfg.ca.gov\/FileHandler.ashx?DocumentID=23561&amp;inline\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:avoid attracting deer;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">avoid attracting deer<\/a> \u2014 cougars\u2019 natural prey \u2014 to your yard or garden by keeping tempting, tasty plants at a minimum and installing proper fencing, the Mountain Lion Foundation said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">You can keep away other mountain lion food sources, including raccoons and feral cats, by storing pet food in a secure enclosure, feeding your animals indoors and securing your garbage cans, the foundation said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cTimed or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mountainlion.org\/predator_aversion_techniques.asp#motion_alarms\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:motion sensor alarms;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">motion sensor alarms<\/a> with flashing lights, loud noises and sprinklers may work on mountain lions, and can also provide an added bonus of scaring other pesky neighbors who show up uninvited,\u201d the Mountain Lion Foundation said.<\/p>\n<p>What should I do if I encounter a mountain lion?<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Before hitting the trail, the Mountain Lion Foundation recommends putting on \u201cbright and highly contrasting clothing\u201d and asking about recent wildlife sightings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">You should <a href=\"https:\/\/mountainlion.org\/stay-safe\/#!four-steps-to-stay-safe\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:stay on trails;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">stay on trails<\/a>, check maps to avoid getting lost and keep your pets secure on leashes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cAvoid jogging or mountain biking in low-light conditions at dusk and dawn,\u201d the Mountain Lion Foundation said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">According to the NPS, you should follow these steps if you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/olym\/learn\/nature\/cougar.htm\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:see a cougar in the wild;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">see a cougar in the wild<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Stop, stay calm and do not turn your back. Do not run.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Face the animal, stand upright, talk calmly and firmly to the cougar and give it a way to escape if you can.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Do all you can to appear larger.
