Photo by Tom Ravenscroft<\/p>\n<p>To create the 8,500-square-metre museum, Nouvel stripped out much of the building&#8217;s interiors. The majority of the original spaces were destroyed in world war two when a Lancaster bomber hit the department store.<\/p>\n<p>A series of pared-back gallery spaces has been created between the existing structure, including concrete columns added during a 1970s renovation and sandstone arches that recall the building&#8217;s facade.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2260374 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/foundation-cartier-art-museum-paris-jean-nouvel-louvre_dezeen_2364_col_1-2-852x1046.jpg\" alt=\"Gallery spaces in Paris\" width=\"1926\" height=\"2364\"  \/>The floors can be reconfigured to create numerous interior arrangements. Photo by Tom Ravenscroft<\/p>\n<p>Running through the centre of the building, the main gallery space is arranged on five giant lifts that measure between 200 and 363 square metres.<\/p>\n<p>These floors, which weigh around 250 tonnes each, are raised and lowered using a cable and pulley lifting system.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s unprecedented,&#8221; explained Ateliers Jean Nouvel studio director Mathieu Forest at the press preview.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Nothing is permanent \u2013 not the floor, not the walls, not the ceiling,&#8221; he continued. &#8220;You visit and then next time you may have an entirely different perspective.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2260376 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/foundation-cartier-art-museum-paris-jean-nouvel-louvre_dezeen_2364_col_2-1-852x720.jpg\" alt=\"Moving gallery spaces in Paris museum\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1999\"  \/>Gallery spaces overlook each other. Photo by Tom Ravenscroft<\/p>\n<p>Each movable floor can be placed in one of 11 different positions over three storeys to create numerous internal arrangements. Placing all the floors on one level creates a 1,200-metre gallery space.<\/p>\n<p>When the platforms are at different levels, retractable balustrades can be extended to stop people from falling.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2259919 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/foundation-cartier-art-museum-paris-jean-nouvel-louvre_dezeen_2364_col_17-852x639.jpg\" alt=\"Moving floor in Jean Nouvel art gallery\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1773\"  \/>The moving floors can each be positioned at 11 heights<\/p>\n<p>The floors are supported and raised on giant, notched steel columns that give a heavy industrial look to the interior, contrasting the original fabric of the historic building.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;All the machinery was left to be seen,&#8221; said Forest. &#8220;It is a moving place that is ready to be reinvented every time,&#8221; he continued.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;For each exhibition you will discover a new building, a new emotion.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2259921 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/foundation-cartier-art-museum-paris-jean-nouvel-louvre_dezeen_2364_col_19-852x639.jpg\" alt=\"Fondation Cartier in Paris\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1773\"  \/>Industrial-looking columns support the floors<\/p>\n<p>Three of the spaces with movable floors occupy former courtyards in the 19th-century building, which have been topped with skylights.<\/p>\n<p>Trees are positioned above the skylights, which include retractable closing mechanisms to allow curators to control the amount of light entering the space.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2259929 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/foundation-cartier-art-museum-paris-jean-nouvel-louvre_dezeen_2364_col_27-852x1136.jpg\" alt=\"View of the Louvre from Fondation Cartier\" width=\"1773\" height=\"2364\"  \/>The galleries offer views of the surrounding streets<\/p>\n<p>Surrounding the main 85-metre-long, movable gallery space are numerous secondary galleries, along with 1,500 square metres of balconies.<\/p>\n<p>These surrounding spaces are all visible from the surrounding streets through full-height windows.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We had to reopen it [the building], reactivate it and connect it to the city to make a new urban landmark,&#8221; explained Forest.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Transparency [was defined early], the arches mean that you can see the street from inside and you can see inside the gallery from the street.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2260378 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/foundation-cartier-art-museum-paris-jean-nouvel-louvre_dezeen_2364_col_3-1-852x967.jpg\" alt=\"Art by Freddy Mamani\" width=\"2082\" height=\"2364\"  \/>A work by Bolivian architect Freddy Mamani is included in the Fondation Cartier&#8217;s opening exhibition. Photo by Tom Ravenscroft<\/p>\n<p>As well as the gallery spaces, the museum contains a small foyer beside the main entrance on Place du Palais-Royal, an auditorium with 110 seats in Nouvel&#8217;s signature red hue, a bookshop and a small cafe.<\/p>\n<p>A large restaurant at the eastern end of the building is set to open in April 2026, with a manufacturing studio space opening later in the year.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2259908 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/foundation-cartier-art-museum-paris-jean-nouvel-louvre_dezeen_2364_col_6-852x639.jpg\" alt=\"The auditorium at Foundation Cartier \" width=\"2364\" height=\"1773\"  \/>The building includes a red auditorium<\/p>\n<p>The gallery&#8217;s opening exhibition, curated by Fondation Cartier&#8217;s Grazia Quaroni and B\u00e9atrice Grenier, is named Exposition G\u00e9n\u00e9rale as a nod to the building&#8217;s former life as a department store.<\/p>\n<p>Designed by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/formafantasma\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Formafantasma<\/a>, it aims to tell the history of the foundation as a commissioner and collector of art over the past 40 years.<\/p>\n<p>Nearly 600 works are on display \u2013 around 10 per cent of the institution&#8217;s collection \u2013 from previous exhibitions held at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jeannouvel.com\/en\/projects\/fondation-cartier-2\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Fondation Cartier&#8217;s old premises in Paris&#8217;s 14th arrondissement<\/a>, which was also designed by Nouvel.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2259907 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/foundation-cartier-art-museum-paris-jean-nouvel-louvre_dezeen_2364_col_5-852x639.jpg\" alt=\"Gallery space in Paris\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1773\"  \/>Its central gallery spaces are overlooked by balconies<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Exposition G\u00e9n\u00e9rale, the inaugural show, plays on the history of the building, which was a department store that organised huge commercial exhibitions, that put together all kinds of different media, artefacts, textiles, fashion, etc. into this kind of hugely democratising approach to displaying objects,&#8221; explained curator Grenier.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;So, we adopted this philosophy to show our collection, which is itself a collection of exhibitions, because the Fondation Cartier, over its whole history of programming for 40 years, commissioned artists exhibited them, and then collected their work.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2259905 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/foundation-cartier-art-museum-paris-jean-nouvel-louvre_dezeen_2364_col_3-852x639.jpg\" alt=\"Skylights in Fondation Cartier\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1773\"  \/>Several of the gallery spaces are topped with skylights<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;So it&#8217;s a conflation of the fact that the museum can be an archive of exhibition making rather than just being an archive of objects,&#8221; mechanism is on show<\/p>\n<p>The final exhibition at the previous gallery for the Olga de Amaral exhibition, which was designed by Lina Ghotmeh \u2013 Architecture, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/awards\/2025\/shortlists\/architecture-and-exhibition-scenography-olga-de-amaral\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">was recently shortlisted for the 2025 Dezeen Awards in the Architecture &amp; Exhibition Scenography category<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere, Nouvel recently completed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2024\/11\/15\/jean-nouvel-philippe-starck-rosewood-sao-paulo-hotel\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a &#8220;vertical garden tower&#8221;
