U.S.-based truck maker Paccar<\/a> Inc. has laid off 300 workers at its Sainte-Th\u00e9r\u00e8se, Que., plant, just weeks before a 25 per cent U.S. import tariff<\/a> on commercial trucks is set to take effect on Nov. 1.<\/p>\n

The manufacturing plant builds Kenworth and Peterbilt trucks and depends heavily on exports to the U.S.<\/p>\n

In a statement, the union said it is calling for urgent government intervention.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese workers are the latest victims of the trade war being waged against us by the United States,\u201d said Unifor Qu\u00e9bec director Daniel Cloutier. He said the union will do everything in its power to support its members who are severely impacted by this announcement.<\/p>\n

He added that \u201cthis situation is a wake-up call,\u201d warning that the tariffs could cost the plant its American customers. \u201cIf the Sainte-Th\u00e9r\u00e8se plant loses its U.S. sales, we must do everything possible to fill the gap with local buyers.\u201d<\/p>\n

The union\u2019s statement said the layoffs highlight the vulnerability of Qu\u00e9bec\u2019s manufacturing sector and the need for immediate action to protect local jobs.<\/p>\n

Quebec\u2019s Economy Minister, Christine Fr\u00e9chette, said Paccar executives expressed interest in developing new products aimed at the Canadian market.<\/p>\n

The province\u2019s Finance Minister, Eric Girard, said he does not view the latest cuts as a fatal blow to the plant.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are still 1,000 employees. This isn\u2019t the end. There\u2019s real expertise and capacity there,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The factory will likely find itself in competition with other plants owned by Paccar, which can shift production to its facilities in the U.S.<\/p>\n

In a conference call with analysts this week, chief executive Preston Feight called the sectoral tariffs \u201ca good thing for Paccar\u2019s customers,\u201d pointing to its plants on American soil that could prove an advantage against competitors.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s going to be good because we manufacture trucks in Texas, Ohio and Washington state,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt will improve our competitive position as we approach next year.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Sainte-Th\u00e9r\u00e8se plant has now seen a total of 725 layoffs this year, including 425 earlier in 2025.<\/p>\n
