It was hard not to laugh a little at the signage for Wednesday\u2019s event, still titled \u201cFirst Choice.\u201d One collector quipped to\u00a0ARTnews, \u201cShouldn\u2019t it be Second Choice?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tTop galleries had already logged a long list of sales by Tuesday evening, including Hauser &amp; Wirth\u2019s placement of a 1987 Gerhard Richter abstract for $23 million\u2014the highest reported sale at the fair so far. This edition of the fair is going to prove crucial for the Paris market.\u201d Napoli added that prices reflected a \u201cbalanced\u201d approach to a \u201cless speculative\u201d moment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tSimone Subal, a senior director at Paula Cooper Gallery, noted\u2014as many dealers did\u2014that collectors returned to the fair for the official VIP opening.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cWhat\u2019s smart is that the time frame yesterday was only four hours, which is not long enough for people to see everything, so they came back,\u201d Subal told\u00a0ARTnews. \u201cIt also takes the pressure off.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tPaula Cooper reported selling a 1965 red lacquer on galvanized steel Donald Judd sculpture for an undisclosed price and a Claes Oldenburg work for between $250,000 and $300,000, as well as works by Alighiero e Boetti, Yayoi Kusama, Giovanni Anselmo, Giulio Paolini, and Christian Marclay. The booth\u2019s focus on Minimalism echoed \u201cMinimal,\u201d an exhibition\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nam02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fclick.email.artnews.com%2F%3Fqs%3D3dbf87667bbd3d371c36447075f6f690fbd5e4524b020e84baa2da52297cb032f425f788aa2ee771bc897539c678b098503c879447182cf9&amp;data=05%7C02%7Chjacobs%40artnews.com%7C9c7a85c6687241159a0b08de11a2c067%7Ce950f25546e44144a778a6ff4f557492%7C0%7C0%7C638967587915616711%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=fb%2Bv%2BbwzrOEDeuFBDI1qHcJ%2FOqolVdFWOWcDX%2BFm6nU%3D&amp;reserved=0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">now on view<\/a>\u00a0at the Pinault Collection.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tA standout was Meg Webster\u2019s\u00a0Moss Bed, Twin(1986\/2025), a sculpture made of moss that took the proportions of a twin bed. Gallery staff watered the piece, priced at $200,000, throughout the day\u2014a gesture of care reflecting the artist\u2019s themes of ecology and impermanence. Still available were a Sol LeWitt sculpture priced at $950,000 and a 1978 Jackie Winsor wire mesh sculpture for $350,000.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tTuesday\u2019s event was marked by several sales in the eight- and seven-figure range, mostly at the usual suspects: Hauser &amp; Wirth, Pace, White Cube, Thaddaeus Ropac, David Zwirner. Add one more to the list: L\u00e9vy Gorvy Dayan, which sold a 1988 abstract painting by Richter. While the gallery declined to provide the sale price, the work last sold at Christie\u2019s New York four years ago for $27.2 million, on a $25 million to $35 million estimate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe other top sales reported Wednesday included a $2.5 million Marlene Dumas painting at Zwirner, and a risqu\u00e9 $4.7 million Bruce Nauman neon, titled\u00a0Masturbating Man, at Hauser &amp; Wirth, which the gallery put front and center in its booth. White Cube reported selling Julie Mehretu\u2019s 2007 painting\u00a0Charioteer\u00a0for $11.5 million, George Baselitz\u2019s 1989\/2003 sculpture\u00a0Dresdner Frauen \u2013 Elke\u00a0for \u20ac2.5 million ($2.9 million), and Luc Tuymans\u2019s 2001 painting\u00a0Bend Over\u00a0for $1.35 million. He added that collectors seemed \u201cmore relaxed\u201d following the Tuesday opening.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cWe sold several good, big works to museums and private collections on both days,\u201d he said.<br \/>The Avant Premi\u00e8re event was not without its hitches. Mayer said that deciding who to give one of the six invites allotted to each gallery was \u201cdifficult\u201d and left some of their clients \u201ca little bit angry\u201d if they didn\u2019t get one.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tSome emerging and medium-sized galleries in the second floor\u2019s less-traveled alleys told\u00a0ARTnews\u00a0that the event wasn\u2019t a boon for them: even the clients who received invites from these dealers didn\u2019t always make it upstairs. \u201cIt was like crickets,\u201d said one American dealer, who asked not to be named. The result, in their view, was a lost day in Paris. But by Wednesday afternoon, the aisles were bustling on the Grand Palais\u2019s upper floors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tUpstairs, San Francisco\u2019s\u00a0Jessica Silverman\u00a0told\u00a0ARTnews\u00a0the fair \u201cfelt like a true international meeting place for collectors, curators, and museum leaders.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tSilverman added that the gallery had a \u201cgreat day,\u201d placing two of Davina Semo\u2019s bronze, suspended bells for $25,000 each. The gallery also sold Atsushi Kaga\u2019s Nature\u2019s Resilience (2025) for $125,000 and six other paintings by Kaga for $22,000 each. He noted that last year he brought a piece by Paulina Peavy. Advisor Vera Alemani saw it and introduced the work to Emanuela Campoli, who then, through Edlin, showed work by Peavy in her gallery in Paris. At this year\u2019s fair, Campoli brought a Peavy and sold it, which benefits Edlin both monetarily and in terms of finding a new audience for the work.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tAlex Logsdail, CEO of Lisson Gallery, similarly stressed taking the focus off the fair\u2019s first day. \u201cThis is a five-day fair for us, not a one-day fair,\u201d he told\u00a0ARTnews. And it has started well. \u201cThe quality of people here is very high, and dealers brought great material,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tAs 5:30 rolled around,\u00a0Brendan Dugan\u00a0could be found at the booth of his New York\u2013 and Los Angeles\u2013based gallery Karma enjoying a beer. He\u2019d earned it: between the Avant Premi\u00e8re and First Choice previews, the gallery sold over 12 artworks, including Matthew Wong\u2019s\u00a0White Wave, Black Sand\u00a0(2017), for $3.5 million, Manoucher Yektai\u2019s\u00a0Still Life with \u201cFrance-Soir\u201d\u00a0(1960) for $750,000, and Reggie Burrows Hodges\u2019s\u00a0Botanist Moon: Kelley\u2019s Work\u00a0(2024) for $350,000.
