{"id":233591,"date":"2025-10-23T05:07:08","date_gmt":"2025-10-23T05:07:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/233591\/"},"modified":"2025-10-23T05:07:08","modified_gmt":"2025-10-23T05:07:08","slug":"international-students-call-on-manitoba-ndp-to-make-good-on-health-care-promise","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/233591\/","title":{"rendered":"International students call on Manitoba NDP to make good on health-care promise"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>International students held a rally Wednesday to call on Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew to make good on a promise to bring back their health-care coverage.<\/p>\n<p>Kinew&#8217;s NDP pledged during the 2023 election campaign that brought the part to power that his government would reinstitute the coverage, rescinded by the Progressive Conservative government in 2018.<\/p>\n<p>Students at the small gathering outside the premier&#8217;s constituency office in Winnipeg Wednesday said two years later, they&#8217;re still not eligible for provincial health insurance.<\/p>\n<p>Omega Budhathoki, vice-president of external affairs at the University of Winnipeg Students&#8217; Association, said that means students must pay for private insurance that only provides them limited coverage.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Students pay over $1,300 on their basic plan, which does not cover a lot of things like prescription drugs, so you still would need some extended coverage,&#8221; Budhathoki said. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"A woman standing in front of people holding signs.\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/1761196028_360_default.jpg\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.5\" data-cy=\"image-img\"\/>Omega Budhathoki with the University of Winnipeg Students&#8217; Association said international students have waited too long for health-care coverage to be restored. (Jeff Stapleton\/CBC)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A lot of people live in a lot of fear \u2026 saying, &#8216;OK I can&#8217;t afford to be sick,'&#8221; she said. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Students are here to get education, not live in anxiety and fear to just keep themselves alive.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Judith Oviosun-Smith, one of the authors of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/manitoba\/international-students-manitoba-health-coverage-1.7115700\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">a 2024 report<\/a> that said students were forgoing care because they fear the costs, said this should be a priority for the province.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have members of our community who are waiting until their illness is critical,&#8221; she said. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We don&#8217;t want to get to a point where we&#8217;re losing people in Manitoba because they&#8217;re afraid to access health-care.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Working on solution: province<\/p>\n<p>A ministerial spokesperson said in a statement the province&#8217;s Health and Advanced Education departments are working on a solution.<\/p>\n<p>Health Minister Uzoma Asagwara said Wednesday it&#8217;s much easier to cut than to restore programs, but reaffirmed the government&#8217;s commitment.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We know that it&#8217;s something that will also make Manitoba more attractive to international students, and with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/intl-student-cap-restrictions-reax-1.7328052\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">changes handed down by the federal governm<\/a>ent in terms of immigration, that becomes really, really important,&#8221; Asagwara said.<\/p>\n<p>The protesters called for coverage to be reinstated at the start of the next school year.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We keep getting told that \u2026 [it&#8217;s] really hard to get anything ongoing right now, or that there&#8217;s been, like, priorities in other places,&#8221; Oviosun-Smith said. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re tired of waiting.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"International students held a rally Wednesday to call on Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew to make good on a&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":233592,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[34],"tags":[49,48,84,392],"class_list":{"0":"post-233591","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-healthcare","8":"tag-ca","9":"tag-canada","10":"tag-health","11":"tag-healthcare"},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/233591","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=233591"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/233591\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/233592"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=233591"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=233591"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=233591"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
