After kicking off his journey on \u201cThe Golden Bachelor\u201d<\/a>\u00a0with 23 senior women, Mel Owens narrowed down his dating pool to just three women ahead of his hometown dates: Cindy Angelcyk Cullers, Debbie Siebers and Peg Munson.<\/p>\n

\u201cI got to know them more each week and their personalities and styles match mine,\u201d Owens told TheWrap. \u201cIt was a process and but these are the ones that I thought matched up with me more than anyone else.\u201d<\/p>\n

As the leading man prepared to meet the women\u2019s families, Owens approached the week with ease, hoping for connections with the family members to happen naturally. \u201cThat way I can get a real feel for how they are, especially around their families,\u201d Owens said. \u201cThe family members get to ask you questions, and I get to ask the family members questions, so you get a real feel for the person\u2019s personality.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hometowns were smooth-sailing until Owens\u2019 trip to Austin, Texas, when Cullers\u2019 daughters noticed what they identified as some hesitation from Owens\u2019 side. Owens maintains he was \u201chonest and true to [himself]\u201d and told them exactly how he felt, saying, \u201cI didn\u2019t mislead them or lead them astray or say something that I didn\u2019t mean.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t know what they were telling their mother, so I didn\u2019t know that at the time, but \u2026 those are their own personal feelings \u2014 they\u2019re there to protect their mom\u2019s interests and for the mom to get advice [but] at the end of the day, it\u2019s Cindy\u2019s decision,\u201d Owens said. \u201cI appreciate their input and how Cindy got the information from them.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ultimately, it wasn\u2019t Cullers nor her daughters who should\u2019ve been concerned, as Owens handed Cullers and Munson his final two roses, sending Siebers home. The decision was nothing against Siebers nor her family, according to Owens.<\/p>\n

\u201cI really enjoy Debbie\u2019s company, and I think she\u2019s really a truly wonderful person \u2014 she has a lot of depth to her and she\u2019s sincere and honest, and that was probably one of the most difficult decisions I had to make on my journey,\u201d Owens said. \u201cAt the end, you have to go through the process, and I just had a deeper connection with the other two \u2026 there can only be one and I had to choose, and I just thought I had a deeper connection with someone else.\u201d<\/p>\n

With just Cullers and Munson left, Owens said he went into fantasy suites with the same ease at which he approached hometowns.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not pressing anybody on anything \u2014 we\u2019re adults, and we want answers on both sides,\u201d Owens said. \u201cI just let the conversation take it where it went \u2026 I let it sort of steer itself. And at the end, I was satisfied with the result.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Golden Bachelor\u201d airs Wednesdays at 9 p.m. ET\/PT\u00a0on ABC and streams the next day on Hulu.<\/p>\n
