We spin off companies that can move research forward in ways that directly benefit society,\u201d said\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ece.cmu.edu\/directory\/bios\/pileggi-larry.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Larry Pileggi<\/a>, professor of electrical and computer engineering and co-founder of CMU startup\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ece.cmu.edu\/news-and-events\/story\/2024\/09\/pearl-street-miso-partnership.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Pearl Street Technologies<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Spinning out solutions<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Pearl Street Technologies is speeding up grid interconnection using a tool developed by Pileggi and his graduate students that reduces power system planning timelines from months to minutes. The tool has already been used for more than 2,000 commercial projects, enabling more than 400 gigawatts of new supply for the grid.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The company is one of a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/energy.cmu.edu\/research-innovation\/energy-startups.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">growing portfolio of startups<\/a> addressing the energy sector\u2019s more persistent problems.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Some startups are advancing the materials and components that make energy systems more efficient.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/energy.cmu.edu\/news\/2022\/11\/25-corepower-magnetics-selected-for-5m-grant.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">CorePower Magnetics<\/a> is commercializing new magnetic materials that are making electric vehicles and renewable energy systems smaller, lighter, more powerful and efficient. Another CMU startup,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/engineering.cmu.edu\/news-events\/news\/2024\/12\/10-sealion-energy.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">SeaLion Energy<\/a>, is improving lithium-ion battery performance by reducing resistance and mechanical wear, helping batteries last longer and operate more reliably under pressure.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Other ventures are making energy systems smarter and more responsive. Born out of research at CMU,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bizjournals.com\/pittsburgh\/inno\/stories\/news\/2025\/02\/07\/peoples-energy-analytics.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Peoples Energy Analytics<\/a> helps utilities use behavioral data to identify customers at risk of defaulting on their energy bills and connect them with assistance programs years before they ever miss a payment.<\/p>\n<p>From research to commercialization<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">For entrepreneurs, the path from fundamental research to commercialization is risky.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"media media--embedded\">\n<p>                  <img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" data-focal-point=\"center center\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/kmhaas copy.jpg.webp\" alt=\"Katelyn Haas-Conrad\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Katelyn Haas-Conrad<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cThese technologies can be game changers in enhancing energy generation and reducing energy consumption in homes, transportation and industry,\u201d said\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/engineering.cmu.edu\/directory\/bios\/haas-conrad-katelyn.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Katelyn Haas-Conrad<\/a>, assistant director of partnerships for CMU\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/energy.cmu.edu\/index.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Wilton E. Scott Institute for Energy Innovation<\/a>. \u201cBut with regulatory compliance issues, complex supply chains and high upfront costs, entrepreneurs with these highly technical startups can require a longer funding runway to achieve profitability.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The Scott Institute aims to smooth the path from research to market through seed funding in the energy and climate tech space. This year, the Institute launched\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/energy.cmu.edu\/news\/2025\/03\/25-new-entrepreneurship-award.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a new entrepreneurship funding initiative<\/a>, awarding up to $100,000 to accelerate CMU founder ideas.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The winners span a wide range of disciplines, including business, robotics and architecture, working to turn research into viable ventures that address energy challenges. Among them is roboticist\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ri.cmu.edu\/ri-faculty\/howie-choset\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Howie Choset<\/a>, the Kavcic-Moura Professor of Computer Science, whose team is improving infrastructure safety by developing robots to inspect small-diameter pipes for issues like natural gas leaks.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Ruben Quesada, an MBA candidate at the Tepper School of Business, will use support from the award to grow the customer base for his startup, Sabana, an AI-driven data management company that makes it easier for developers to source sustainable building materials.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Other awardees include Ph.D. student TJ Thomas, who is applying robotics to remove harmful algal blooms, minimizing their impact on ecosystems and public health. Architectural doctoral student Waku Ken-Opurum is pursuing prototype development of a biodegradable air filter.
