{"id":234314,"date":"2025-10-23T11:51:14","date_gmt":"2025-10-23T11:51:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/234314\/"},"modified":"2025-10-23T11:51:14","modified_gmt":"2025-10-23T11:51:14","slug":"stacked-culinary-hub-by-big-and-bat-architecture-liberates-the-ground","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/234314\/","title":{"rendered":"Stacked culinary hub by BIG and Bat Architecture &#8220;liberates the ground&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sloping <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/walkable-roofs\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">walkable roof<\/a> terraces stretch over GOE, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/food\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">food<\/a> research centre that Danish architecture studio <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/big\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">BIG<\/a> and Spanish studio Bat Architecture designed as a continuation of the landscape at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/san-sebastian\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">San Sebasti\u00e1n<\/a>, Spain.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/goe.bculinary.com\/en\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">GOE<\/a>, which stands for Gastronomy Open Ecosystem, was designed by <a href=\"https:\/\/big.dk\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">BIG<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bat.archi\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bat Architecture<\/a> for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bculinary.com\/en\/home\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Basque Culinary Centre<\/a> as a hub for food innovation, aiming to bring together start-ups, researchers and chefs under one curving roof.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2261209 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/goe-basque-culinary-centre-big-bat-architecture_dezeen_2364_col_14-852x479.jpg\" alt=\"GOe in San Sebasti\u00e1n by BIG and Bat Architecture\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1330\"  \/>GOE is a food research centre designed by BIG and Bat Architecture<\/p>\n<p>Located at the base of Mount Ulia on a site with a 10 metre height difference, GOE was partially submerged into the sloping landscape.<\/p>\n<p>Its walkable roof gently rises as it stretches towards the nearby sea, forming a series of outdoor terraces that overlook culinary activities inside the building through tall windows.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2261229 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/goe-basque-culinary-centre-big-bat-architecture_dezeen_2364_col_34-852x1277.jpg\" alt=\"GOe Basque Culinary Centre by BIG and Bat Architecture\" width=\"1577\" height=\"2364\"  \/>It was topped with walkable roof terraces<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Conceived as an architectural extension of the dramatic landscape and cityscape of San Sebasti\u00e1n, our design liberates the ground and provides parks on the roof, inviting the public life of the city to engage with the art and science of gastronomy,&#8221; said BIG founder Bjarke Ingels.<\/p>\n<p>A central gastronomy hall was designed as the backbone of the building, forming the entry space on the lower ground floor and rising into a staircase with stepped seating that can be used for events and lectures.<\/p>\n<p>The staircase connects kitchens, laboratories and classrooms at GOE, which were designed as flexible spaces that could be easily rearranged for different needs.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2261221 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/goe-basque-culinary-centre-big-bat-architecture_dezeen_2364_col_26-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"GOe Basque Culinary Centre in San Sebasti\u00e1n by BIG and Bat Architecture\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1577\"  \/>Public outdoor space wraps the building<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Its design translates the strength of San Sebasti\u00e1n&#8217;s landscape into fluid architecture \u2013 a building that emerges from the terrain, featuring a public plinth, green terraces, and a monumental staircase connecting inside and out,&#8221; said Bat Architecture.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The glass facade blurs boundaries between interior and exterior, while the stepped green roof evokes the flysch formations characteristic of the Basque coastline.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2025\/06\/02\/heatherwick-big-landscraper-google-kings-cross\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"191\" height=\"191\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/google-headquarters-landscraper-heatherwick-big-london-kings-cross-architecture_dezeen_1704_sq2-191x.jpeg\" class=\"excludeLightbox wp-post-image\" alt=\"Google's King's Cross office by BIG and Heatherwick Studio\" decoding=\"async\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\"  \/><\/p>\n<p> BIG and Heatherwick&#8217;s landscraper revealed nearing completion in London\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>GOE&#8217;s kitchen and education spaces were finished with industrial materials for hygiene and maintenance reasons.<\/p>\n<p>Publicly accessible spaces, including a restaurant on the top floor, feature natural surfaces such as wood and stone to create a welcoming environment.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2261206 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/goe-basque-culinary-centre-big-bat-architecture_dezeen_2364_col_11-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"Walkable roof over a food research centre by BIG and Bat Architecture\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1577\"  \/>GOE was designed to emerge from the coastal San Sebasti\u00e1n landscape<\/p>\n<p>Outdoor public space and planted landscaping were designed to connect GOE with the adjacent Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route.<\/p>\n<p>A stepped area leads from the main street to a pathway around the back of the building, which gives access to the building&#8217;s rooftop.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2261227 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/goe-basque-culinary-centre-big-bat-architecture_dezeen_2364_col_32-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"Staircase with stepped seating in a food research centre by BIG and Bat Architecture\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1577\"  \/>A staircase with stepped seating can be used as an event space<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Located on the heralded Camino de Santiago de Compostela, we believe that this architectural fusion of gastronomy and technology, city and landscape, building and park has the potential to become a destination in its own right for culinary pilgrims from around the world,&#8221;
