Stephen Miller has slammed his one-time idol Robert De Niro after the actor labeled the White House deputy chief of staff a \u201cNazi.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Hollywood icon, 82, used the insult after suggesting Donald Trump will want to cling to office when his second term ends.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s set it up with, I guess he\u2019s the Goebbels of the Cabinet, Stephen Miller,\u201d De Niro told MSNBC<\/a> on Sunday, referencing Joseph Goebbels, who was Adolf Hitler\u2019s propaganda minister in Nazi Germany. <\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s a Nazi, yes he is, and he\u2019s Jewish. He should be ashamed of himself,\u201d De Niro said of Miller.<\/p>\n

Miller, 40, got to return fire at the movie star during an appearance on Fox News\u2019 Hannity on Wednesday, but did not directly address the \u201cNazi\u201d insult.<\/p>\n

\u201cRobert De Niro is a sad, bitter, broken old man who is mostly enraged because he has not made a movie worth watching in at least 30 years,\u201d Miller said, claiming the distinguished actor\u2019s career had featured \u201cprobably the longest string of flops, failures, embarrassments.\u201d<\/p>\n

Miller continued, \u201cThis man has been degrading himself on camera with one horrific film after another for my entire adult life and he is not taken seriously by anybody. Not by his family, not by his friends, not by his community. He is a shell of a man and everyone disregards everything he says.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

However, a 2020 Vanity Fair<\/a> profile of Miller from 2020 revealed he had framed posters of two iconic De Niro gangster films, Casino and Goodfellas, on his bedroom wall as a teenager.<\/p>\n

People he went to school with revealed Miller would slick back his hair to look like De Niro\u2019s Casino character Sam \u201cAce\u201d Rothstein. \u201cHe\u2019d wear like a gold mafia-style ring on his finger. It was just bizarre. Everyone commented on his weird jewelry and I think he would wear a gold chain, too, occasionally,\u201d classmate Jenness Hartley recalled<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Miller, the driving force behind the Trump administration\u2019s migrant deportation campaign, also once picked Casino as his favorite film. It was released in 1995\u2014despite Miller claiming De Niro had not released a \u201cmovie worth watching\u201d in at least 30 years. <\/p>\n

The Vanity Fair profile said Miller studied De Niro\u2019s gestures from his mobster films to incorporate them into his own political persona. <\/p>\n

Another classmate of Miller\u2019s recalled, \u201cAll these conservative guys can\u2019t help themselves, it\u2019s such a horrible clich\u00e9 but they love the mafia. The mobster is the perfect encapsulation of the conservative worldview, where there\u2019s no real law and order apart from \u2018might makes right.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Despite Miller\u2019s claims, De Niro has featured in a string of acclaimed and successful films released in the last 30 years, including Heat (1995), Jackie Brown (1997), Wag the Dog (1997), Cop Land (1997), Ronin (1998), Analyze This (1999) Meet the Parents (2000), Silver Linings Playbook (2012), American Hustle (2013) Joker (2019) and The Irishman (2019).<\/p>\n

De Niro was nominated for an Academy Award, BAFTA, SAG Award, and a Golden Globe last year for his role in Killers of the Flower Moon.<\/p>\n

The Daily Beast has contacted De Niro\u2019s publicist for comment.<\/p>\n

During his interview with MSNBC\u2019s The Weekend, De Niro, a regular critic of Trump, said the president wants to hurt America.<\/p>\n

\u201cTrump does not understand anything about humanity, people,\u201d De Niro said. \u201cHe has no empathy. I don\u2019t know where\u2014what he is, but he\u2019s an alien, and he wants to hurt this country.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s something deeply psychological in him, he wants to hurt people. He wants to hurt this country, doesn\u2019t care.\u201d<\/p>\n

White House Communications Director Steven Cheung told the Daily Beast this week: \u201cRobert De Niro is a washed up has-been who hasn\u2019t been relevant in 30 years. Now, he just beclowns himself by spewing hate speech and inciting violence against others.\u201d<\/p>\n
