{"id":23471,"date":"2025-07-25T16:45:10","date_gmt":"2025-07-25T16:45:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/23471\/"},"modified":"2025-07-25T16:45:10","modified_gmt":"2025-07-25T16:45:10","slug":"u-s-and-canada-might-not-reach-trade-deal-trump-says","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/23471\/","title":{"rendered":"U.S. and Canada might not reach trade deal, Trump says"},"content":{"rendered":"<p dir=\"ltr\">U.S. President Donald Trump says his country may not reach a new trade deal with Canada and could simply impose more or higher tariffs on its northern neighbour\u00a0\u2014\u00a0something he&#8217;s threatening\u00a0to do in one week&#8217;s time.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;We haven&#8217;t really had a lot of luck with Canada,&#8221; Trump told reporters Friday outside the White House in response to a question about the state of tariff talks with U.S. trading partners.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;I think Canada could be one where there&#8217;s just a tariff, not really a negotiation,&#8221; he said, before departing on a trip to Scotland.\u00a0It&#8217;s the first time Trump has publicly spoken about the state of talks with Canada in nearly two weeks.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Trump sent\u00a0a letter to Prime Minister Mark Carney on July 10,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/politics\/trump-35-per-cent-tariffs-1.7582563\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">threatening<\/a> to hit Canada with 35 per cent tariffs on Aug. 1.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">That rate would apply to Canadian exports currently being tariffed at 25 per cent, under <a rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/politics\/trump-tariff-march-4-1.7469928\" target=\"_blank\">Trump&#8217;s emergency powers<\/a>, citing the national security threat from fentanyl trafficking.\u00a0Most Canadian goods are exempt from that tariff, provided they meet the North American content rules\u00a0of the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA).<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Separately, Canadian steel and aluminum are facing a 50 per cent tariff that the U.S. has imposed on such imports from all countries, while the U.S. tariff on Canadian energy and potash is set at 10 per cent.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>WATCH |\u00a0Canada&#8217;s trade team downplays prospects for deal by Aug. 1:\u00a0<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/1753461910_868_default.jpg\"  alt=\"\" class=\"thumbnail\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"video-item-title\">Canada-U.S. trade deal hopes appear to fade after latest talks<\/p>\n<p>Although U.S. President Donald Trump\u2019s Aug. 1 deadline is fast approaching, there is no sign of a breakthrough yet on a new Canada-U.S. trade deal after a week of talks in Washington, D.C. Ottawa continues to say it won\u2019t sign anything that isn\u2019t in Canada\u2019s best interest.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Trump made his comments after a reporter asked what he expects between now and next Friday, the date set for imposing\u00a0new or higher tariffs on many of the U.S.&#8217;s biggest trading partners.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;Aug. 1\u00a0is going to come and we will have most of our deals finished, if not all,&#8221; Trump said. He spoke of progress in talks with Australia, the European Union and China, but singled out Canada for criticism.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Haven&#8217;t been focused on&#8217; Canada<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;We don&#8217;t have a deal with Canada;\u00a0we haven&#8217;t been focused on them,&#8221; Trump said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Trump&#8217;s comments are the latest nail in the coffin of Canada&#8217;s prospects for a deal by the U.S. president&#8217;s deadline.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">On Thursday, during a visit to Washington, Canada&#8217;s top trade negotiators\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/world\/tariffs-trade-trump-leblanc-hillman-lutnick-1.7592916\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">downplayed the likelihood<\/a> they&#8217;ll get an agreement by Aug. 1.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;We&#8217;re going to continue to work toward the Aug. 1 deadline,&#8221; said Canada-U.S. Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc. &#8220;But all of these deadlines are with the understanding that we&#8217;ll take the time necessary to get the best deal that we think is in the interest of the Canadian economy and Canadian workers.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Trump in front of a helicopter\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/1753461910_353_trump.jpg\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.4993646759847523\" data-cy=\"image-img\"\/>Trump walks to board Marine One on the south lawn of the White House on Friday. (Alex Brandon\/The Associated Press)<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Earlier this week, Carney had\u00a0told a news conference that his objective is &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/politics\/carney-attends-first-ministers-meeting-1.7590547\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">not to reach a deal whatever it costs<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">After Carney met with Canada&#8217;s premiers, Nova Scotia&#8217;s Tim Houston said the prime minister isn&#8217;t dead set on signing a deal by the deadline.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The last time Trump spoke publicly about trade talks with Canada was in a July 14 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/programmes\/p0lqbfzc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">interview with the BBC&#8217;s\u00a0Gary O&#8217;Donoghue<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;We&#8217;re negotiating with Canada right now and we&#8217;ll see how that all works out.
