Premier Fran\u00e7ois Legault says he intends to keep fighting for Quebecers, despite a new poll showing that more than 80 per cent of voters do not want him to run in next year\u2019s provincial election.<\/p>\n

The La Presse survey found that only 16 per cent of respondents believe Legault should seek another mandate, underscoring a sharp decline in his personal popularity after seven years in power.<\/p>\n

\u201cI will continue to fight for Quebecers,\u201d Legault said Wednesday when asked about the results.<\/p>\n

The poll adds to a series of surveys showing the Coalition Avenir Qu\u00e9bec trailing both the Parti Qu\u00e9b\u00e9cois and the Quebec Liberal Party in voter intentions, while Legault\u2019s approval ratings continue to drop.<\/p>\n

Opposition politicians said the numbers reflect widespread frustration with the government.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe people have lost confidence in the whole government, not only in the premier,\u201d said Parti Qu\u00e9b\u00e9cois MNA Alex Boissonneault.<\/p>\n

Qu\u00e9bec solidaire MNA Guillaume Cliche-Rivard said the results mirror what he hears from voters.<\/p>\n

\u201cMinister Legault is receiving what he deserves. He accumulated fiascos after fiascos,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Still, the La Presse poll found that a majority of Quebecers support some of Legault\u2019s policies, including measures to ban public prayer and prohibit religious symbols in subsidized daycares.<\/p>\n

Daniel B\u00e9land, director of the McGill Institute for the Study of Canada, said that the issue for the CAQ may be its leader rather than its platform.<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter seven years in power, the leader being so unpopular, there would usually be people within the party trying to push him out,\u201d B\u00e9land said.<\/p>\n

However senior cabinet ministers have moved quickly to reaffirm their loyalty.<\/p>\n

\u201cMr. Legault has all my confidence and all the confidence of the caucus,\u201d said Culture Minister Mathieu Lacombe.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re all behind him,\u201d added Social Services Minister Lionel Carmant.<\/p>\n

Liberal Leader Pablo Rodriguez said he expects Legault to finish his mandate.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe only thing I\u2019m asking him: don\u2019t make too many mistakes, please,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Legault maintains he remains the best choice to lead Quebec into the 2026 election.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt will be up to Quebecers to choose their premier,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Analysts say if the CAQ\u2019s poll numbers remain low, more of the party\u2019s MNAs could opt not to run again.<\/p>\n

The poll found none of Legault\u2019s potential successors had more than 14 per cent support among voters.<\/p>\n
