{"id":234958,"date":"2025-10-23T17:51:08","date_gmt":"2025-10-23T17:51:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/234958\/"},"modified":"2025-10-23T17:51:08","modified_gmt":"2025-10-23T17:51:08","slug":"palais-de-tokyo-removes-illegal-cameron-rowland-martinican-flag-work","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/234958\/","title":{"rendered":"Palais de Tokyo Removes &#8216;Illegal&#8217; Cameron Rowland Martinican Flag Work"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artnews.com\/t\/palais-de-tokyo\/\" id=\"auto-tag_palais-de-tokyo\" data-tag=\"palais-de-tokyo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Palais de Tokyo<\/a> in Paris took down a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artnews.com\/t\/cameron-rowland\/\" id=\"auto-tag_cameron-rowland\" data-tag=\"cameron-rowland\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cameron Rowland<\/a> piece not long after it went on view, appending new wall text that notes that the removed work may have been \u201cconsidered illegal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tRowland\u2019s work, titled Replacement (2025), was commissioned for \u201cECHO DELAY REVERB,\u201d a recently opened exhibition that focuses on American artists who have been influenced by French theory. The show was organized by Naomi Beckwith, deputy director and chief curator of the Guggenheim Museum in New York and the artistic director of Documenta 16.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tReplacement involved switching out the French flag that normally hangs above the museum with the Martinican one. As usual for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artnews.com\/art-in-america\/features\/cameron-rowland-conceptual-financial-profile-1234683025\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Rowland\u2019s work<\/a>, the piece comes with an extended caption explicating the history behind the artist\u2019s gesture.<\/p>\n<p>\t\tRelated Articles<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-lazy-image__img lrv-u-background-color-grey-lightest lrv-u-width-100p lrv-u-display-block lrv-u-height-auto\" src=\"https:\/\/www.artnews.com\/wp-content\/themes\/vip\/pmc-artnews-2019\/assets\/public\/lazyload-fallback.gif\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/GettyImages-950031050.jpg\" alt=\"A columned building surrounding a plaza with a sculpture of a woman in front of it.\" data-lazy- data-lazy- height=\"\" width=\"\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cSince it was colonized by the French in 1635, Martinique has been a part of France,\u201d the caption begins. \u201cMartinique remains part of the French nation-state as an overseas department. France remains reliant on Martinique. Black Martinicans have pursued the end of French rule for 390 years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe caption goes on to quote the mission statement of the Mouvement Ind\u00e9pendantiste Martiniquais, a French political party that seeks Martinican independence. That statement reads, \u201cMartinique remains a politically dominated territory, economically exploited, militarily occupied, culturally alienated and fettered by the European free-trade agenda, which prohibits any idea of lasting protection for our island economy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tRowland\u2019s piece uses the flag adopted by Martinique in 2023, featuring bands of black and green, along with a red triangle\u2014not the one that France had used prior to then, with a white cross and four snakes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tReplacement went on view on Wednesday, along with the rest of \u201cECHO DELAY REVERB.\u201d On Thursday, Rowland\u2019s New York\u2013based gallery, Maxwell Graham, said on Instagram that the work had been taken out of the show.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe gallery <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DQJjyPvCMYn\/?img_index=1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">posted to Instagram<\/a> images of the piece\u2019s new wall text, which reads, \u201cPalais de Tokyo has determined that Cameron Rowland\u2019s artwork could be considered illegal. As a result it is no longer included in the exhibition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe Palais de Tokyo and a representative for Rowland did not respond to request for comment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tAlthough it wasn\u2019t immediately clear what was unlawful about Replacement, relations between France and Martinique have remained strained in the past year. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIn 2024, Martinique was roiled by protests over high food prices. At the time, food prices there were 40 percent higher than they were in mainland France, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/americas\/20241011-france-martinique-protests-riots-prices\" target=\"_blank\">according to the Agence France-Presse<\/a>. The protests turned violent, resulting in the death of one person as a police station was set on fire. France subsequently called in an anti-riot police force that had been banned for more than six decades prior, and Martinican authorities banned the demonstrations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tRowland\u2019s work has been widely shown in the US and Europe, where the artist is acclaimed for their sculptures composed of ready-made objects enlisted to address histories that are under-known or largely invisible.
