Lithuania’s army reported on Thursday\u00a0that two Russian<\/a> military aircraft\u00a0had crossed the Lithuanian<\/a> border,\u00a0remaining in\u00a0the NATO member state’s airspace\u00a0for 18\u00a0seconds.<\/p>\n

The aircraft, a fighter jet and a tanker, flew 700 meters (nearly half a mile) into Lithuania from the Kaliningrad region<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Lithianian air force detected the Russian SU-30 and IL-78 aircraft near\u00a0Kybartai\u00a0at around 6 p.m. (1600 GMT).<\/p>\n

Two Spanish air force Eurofighters were scrambled in response to the incursion.<\/p>\n

Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda called the move a “blatant breach of international law and territorial integrity of Lithuania” in a post on X that said it “confirms the importance of strengthening European air defense readiness.”<\/p>\n

Nauseda’s post also noted that Vilnius’ Foreign Ministry would summon Russian embassy representatives to protest Russia’s “reckless and dangerous behavior.”<\/p>\n

Russian violations of NATO airspace becoming more common<\/p>\n

Thursday’s incident is just the latest in a series of encroachments<\/a> in which Russian jets as well as drones have breached NATO airspace.<\/p>\n

Poland, Romania, Denmark, Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania have all been subjected to such incursions over the past few weeks.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0situation has alarmed European leaders who accuse Russian President Vladimir Putin<\/a> of conducting what they call a hybrid war and suggesting that these provocations are designed to terrorize European citizens and test NATO resolve and readiness.<\/p>\n

The Baltic nations<\/a> of Lithuania, Latvia<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Estonia<\/a>, as well as neighboring nations Finland<\/a> and Poland<\/a>, all share borders with Russia<\/a>, putting them squarely at NATO<\/a> and the European Union’s eastern flank.<\/p>\n

They also share a special history with Russia.<\/p>\n

Each has been invaded and occupied by it\u00a0at one point or another<\/a>, and\u00a0they fear Putin intends to force them back under Moscow’s\u00a0yoke if he is not stopped in Ukraine.<\/p>\n
