The bout also knocked one of the combatants out of the game.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/4697820\/matt-rempe\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Matt Rempe<\/a> of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/team\/_\/name\/nyr\/new-york-rangers\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">New York Rangers<\/a> challenged <a href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/3683\/ryan-reaves\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ryan Reaves<\/a> of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/team\/_\/name\/sj\/san-jose-sharks\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">San Jose Sharks<\/a> to a fight after Reaves knocked <a href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/4867883\/juuso-parssinen\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Juuso Parssinen<\/a> off his skates. Rempe likely also wanted to get his team going after falling behind by allowing a goal less than two minutes in.<\/p>\n<p>After sizing each other up and grappling, Reaves&#8217; helmet fell off, and then he knocked off Rempe&#8217;s with his next right. The two exchanged blows for more than 20 seconds, with the crowd buzzing.<\/p>\n<p>Editor&#8217;s Picks<a name=\"&amp;lpos=story:editorspicks:inline:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/story\/_\/id\/46673877\/nhl-2025-26-playoffs-projections-best-teams-standings\" class=\"img-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/r1563655_1296x1296_1-1.jpg&#038;w=130&#038;h=130&#038;scale=crop&#038;location=center.jpeg\" width=\"65\" height=\"65\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Rempe got Reaves&#8217; jersey over his head and was striking at Reaves&#8217; head when linesmen Shandor Alphonso and Matt MacPherson broke it up. Reaves went to the penalty box to serve the 5-minute major, while Rempe went down the tunnel with training staff.<\/p>\n<p>Fans chanted, &#8220;Rempe! Rempe!&#8221; as he exited. Rempe did not return for the second period, and the Rangers announced the 23-year-old was out for the remainder of the game because of an upper-body injury.<\/p>\n<p>The league has recently prevented players from removing their helmets before fighting. Reaves, who is 6-foot-2 and 225 pounds, is one of just four players left allowed not to wear a visor.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\" lazyload lazyload\" data-image-container=\".inline-photo\" height=\"320\" width=\"570\"\/>The Rangers&#8217; Matt Rempe and the Sharks&#8217; Ryan Reaves exchanged blows for more than 20 seconds in a fight that knocked Rempe out of the game because of an upper-body injury.\u00a0Photo by Jared Silber\/NHLI via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Most of the guys coming in that fight have to wear visors, so if anything, I&#8217;m at a disadvantage,&#8221; Reaves told The Associated Press after the Sharks&#8217; morning skate earlier Thursday. &#8220;I miss fighting guys with no visor because I cut my hands a lot more, and they&#8217;re able to protect themself a little bit more. I find I&#8217;ve got to get through an extra layer to get to the face.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Fighting has drastically decreased from a time when there was one roughly every other game. Fisticuffs are down 200% since the 2000-01 season.<\/p>\n<p>Rempe, who is 6-foot-9 and 261 pounds, became an instant fan favorite and popular teammate in 2024 for his willingness to fight some of the sport&#8217;s most established enforcers.
