It’s been a long road for the sequel to\u00a02005’s\u00a0Constantine\u00a0starring Keanu Reeves to materialize. In 2022, nearly 20 years after the first film’s release, it was announced<\/a> that Constantine 2 was officially in development, written by Akiva Goldsman and directed by Francis\u00a0Lawrence, who also directed the first\u00a0Constantine. The kicker? Keanu Reeves was confirmed\u00a0to be returning as the character.<\/p>\n

Shortly after that reveal, James Gunn and Peter Safran were announced as the co-heads of DC Studios.\u00a0Given the studio’s focus on creating a cohesive and unified universe, it put into question for some whether or not Constantine 2\u00a0was still\u00a0feasible. However, in 2023,\u00a0Warner Bros. Discovery confirmed<\/a> the\u00a0sequel was still\u00a0in development. Since then,\u00a0updates on it had\u00a0been sparse; that is, until now.\u00a0In an interview on the BobaTalks YouTube channel<\/a>,\u00a0James Gunn himself\u00a0chimed in on the state of the project, revealing he’s talked to Keanu Reeves about it:\u00a0<\/p>\n

“I’ve discussed it on and off. I discussed it with Keanu. So, yeah, I mean, that’s a great group of guys. I like all those people a lot, I think they’re talented, but I have not\u00a0read any script yet, so…”<\/p>\n

This comment comes on the heels of Keanu Reeves providing his own update on the project. Speaking to Fandango<\/a>\u00a0in early October to promote his film, Good Fortune, the actor was asked if there were any news on Contstantine 2. He offered an optimistic response, stating: “Yeah, fingers crossed. You know, another draft of the script came in. We’re waiting. We’re gonna take it to the studio. Hopefully, they like it, too.”<\/p>\n

The road\u00a0to getting\u00a0Constantine 2\u00a0off the ground\u00a0seems to be a somewhat challenging\u00a0one. In September 2024, Constantine producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura stated<\/a> he had received a screenplay for the film. Shortly after that, speaking to Inverse<\/a> in February 2025, Reeves\u00a0said he and the Constantine 2 team had pitched their long-in-development sequel to DC Studios:\u00a0<\/p>\n

“We’ve been trying to make this film for over a decade, and we just recently put a story together and pitched it to DC Studios and they said, ‘Okay.’\u00a0So, we’re going to try and write a script.”<\/p>\n

After that, however, Peter Stromare, who portrayed Lucifer in 2005’s Constantine, stated that Reeves was unhappy<\/a> with the scripts that had been delivered for the sequel. It’s important to note that Reeves’ thoughts on the scripts given to him\u00a0could have been for previous versions of the film, prior to the development that it’s experienced in more recent years. Plus, given Reeves’ latest update in October, it appears he’s\u00a0satisfied with the latest version of the movie.<\/p>\n

Now, while the updates on Reeves’ side have been optimistic, Gunn’s comments make it feel like the movie is still quite far away. Whether or not that’s the case is impossible to know at the moment. For now, though, it looks like Constantine 2’s slow-but-steady climb toward the big screen continues.\u00a0<\/p>\n
