{"id":236481,"date":"2025-10-24T08:32:27","date_gmt":"2025-10-24T08:32:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/236481\/"},"modified":"2025-10-24T08:32:27","modified_gmt":"2025-10-24T08:32:27","slug":"ucp-government-to-allow-albertans-to-pay-privately-for-some-health-care-services","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/236481\/","title":{"rendered":"UCP government to allow Albertans to pay privately for some health care services"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Alberta\u2019s UCP government has announced that it will introduce legislation this fall to allow Albertans to privately purchase diagnostic screen and testing services such as MRIs, CT scans and blood work.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/1760811489_47_70c8fc80.png\" alt=\"\" style=\"position:absolute;width:1px;height:1px\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\"\/><\/p>\n<p>In a news release announcing the changes, the government claims the changes will improve access and help deliver faster, more effective care, increase capacity, shorten wait times and reduce pressure on Alberta\u2019s public health system.<\/p>\n<p>Under the current system, the government claims \u201clong diagnostic imaging wait times and growing waitlists for preventative screening are delaying timely care for Albertans.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The government also claims that under the UCP\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/unitedconservative.ca\/annoucement\/publicly-funded-health-care-guarantee\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Public Health Guarantee,<\/a> all physician-recommended tests will continue to be fully covered and prioritized in all facilities, public or private, across the province and if a privately-purchased test reveals a significant or critical condition, the out-of-pocket cost will be reimbursed to the patient.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tCritics point to the Alberta government\u2019s failed contract with Dynalife to provide blood and other lab tests as an example of the perils of private health care.\t\t\t\t <\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tGlobal News\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>However, critics accuse the government of introducing \u201cAmerican-style health care,\u201d which will require Albertans to pay out of pocket for such services.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"170\" height=\"225\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/healthiq.jpg\" alt=\"Receive the latest medical news and health information delivered to you every Sunday.\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tGet weekly health news<\/p>\n<p>Receive the latest medical news and health information delivered to you every Sunday.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.friendsofmedicare.org\/throne_speech_2025\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Friends of Medicare says the change<\/a> will worsen wait times and reduce capacity in the public health care system.<\/p>\n<p>It points to <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/9910310\/alberta-opposition-urges-audit-of-failed-provincial-lab-testing-privatization-plan\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the province\u2019s failed attempt to privatize community lab testing for basic diagnostic services<\/a> such as blood testing, as an example of what could go wrong.<\/p>\n<p>In 2022, the UCP government contacted out the services to private provider Dynalife, but less than a year later, following a flood of complaints about long wait times and delays in getting results, <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/10334267\/auditor-general-review-dynalife-contract\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the province was forced to step in<\/a> and have publicly-owned Alberta Precision Laboratories take over the services again at a cost to taxpayers of at least $31 million.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-video__image\" alt=\"Click to play video: 'Alberta moves to de-privatize community lab tests in face of long waits, bottlenecks with Dynalife'\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/6P_LAB_SERVICE_CHANGES.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\"   data-\/><\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t2:05<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tAlberta moves to de-privatize community lab tests in face of long waits, bottlenecks with Dynalife\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>The Alberta NDP\u2019s health critic, Sarah Hoffman, is accusing the UCP of creating a \u201ctwo-tier system based on those who can pay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hoffman says, in a news release, that the changes will pull resources away from the public health care system, create longer wait times for those who need care and poorer health outcomes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDanielle Smith promised to fix the health care system in 90 days.
