As a wildlife photographer, R\u00e9mi Vacher<\/a> recently got to fulfill a lifelong dream \u2014 capturing stunning images of the world\u2019s most elusive wild cat species in the rugged terrain of the Indian Himalayas.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was in an expedition \u2026 to look for snow leopards,\u201d Vacher told The Dodo. \u201cI definitely came with the purpose of finding and photographing snow leopards.\u201d<\/p>\n

Vacher was successful in his mission, returning home with numerous stunning photos of <\/a>snow leopards<\/a> in the wild<\/a>.<\/p>\n

But it also came with some delightful surprises.<\/p>\n

One day on his trip, Vacher watched from afar as a snow leopard he\u2019d been tracking came into full view on a snowy mountainside.<\/p>\n

\u201cJust seeing her walking in this deep snow was beautiful, because often you see them in a more cluttered landscape,\u201d Vacher said.<\/p>\n

But then in an instant, the unexpected happened \u2014 the snow leopard began to play.<\/p>\n

Jumping and sliding through the snow with no apparent purpose but her own enjoyment, the snow leopard seemed delighted with life.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen she started doing that, I couldn\u2019t believe it,\u201d Vacher said. \u201cI\u2019d never seen that behavior before, and the team that was with me (snow leopard experts) had never seen it before either!\u201d<\/p>\n

The scene revealed a playful side to a species still largely shrouded in mystery<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Snow leopards face a number of threats<\/a>, including habitat loss and poaching. Vacher hopes his photography \u2014 both the haunting and the amusing \u2014 will serve as a reminder of the importance of protecting them.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is a very endangered species that requires so much attention, which is why it is very close to my heart,\u201d Vacher said. \u201cMany people don\u2019t know what a snow leopard is, so bringing attention to them is my role, as they are not easily accessible. The more people know, the more people care.\u201d<\/p>\n

Vacher continues:<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd I think somehow seeing a snow leopard enjoying herself can remind us that life is short and it is important to enjoy every moment.\u201d<\/p>\n
