\n\tPaul Thomas Anderson<\/a> is ready to lean into the laughs with \u201cOne Battle After Another<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe acclaimed action thriller, loosely inspired by Thomas Pynchon\u2019s novel \u201cVineland,\u201d will compete in the comedy categories at the upcoming Golden Globe Awards, Variety has confirmed via FYC materials that were sent to voters. <\/p>\n

\n\tThe Warner Bros. epic follows a group of former revolutionaries who reunite to rescue a comrade\u2019s daughter after a long-dormant enemy reemerges. The ensemble cast includes Leonardo DiCaprio<\/a>, Sean Penn, Benicio Del Toro, Regina Hall, Teyana Taylor and Chase Infiniti. As previously reported by Variety<\/a>, DiCaprio and Infiniti will compete in the lead acting categories across all groups during awards season, while the rest of the cast will seek consideration in supporting roles.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe film\u2019s tonal balancing act \u2014 mixing absurdist humor with Anderson\u2019s trademark intensity \u2014 seemed obviously comedic to casual awards observers, and the filmmakers, along with studio awards strategists, felt similarly. In the comedy and musical races, the movie is expected to face off against A24\u2019s \u201cMarty Supreme,\u201d Focus Features\u2019 \u201cBugonia,\u201d Universal Pictures\u2019 \u201cWicked: For Good\u201d and others.<\/p>\n

\n\tWith a 95% critics\u2019 score on Rotten Tomatoes and a 95 rating on Metacritic, \u201cOne Battle After Another\u201d has emerged as one of the most celebrated releases of the year. Variety\u2019s recent predictions list it as a major Oscar contender, potentially scoring up to 14 nominations \u2014 a number that would tie the record held by \u201cAll About Eve\u201d (1950), \u201cTitanic\u201d (1997) and \u201cLa La Land\u201d (2016). The film could manage to break the record with the addition of a new casting category this year.<\/p>\n

\n\tAt the Golden Globes<\/a>, the film also has a shot to make history. Robert Altman\u2019s classic \u201cNashville\u201d (1975) currently holds the record for most nominations for a single film with 11, while Jacques Audiard\u2019s Spanish-language musical \u201cEmilia P\u00e9rez\u201d (2024) is second with 10. Variety\u2019s Globes forecast below has \u201cOne Battle After Another\u201d on track to land around 10 nominations, which would tie it with \u201cEmilia P\u00e9rez\u201d as the second-most nominated film ever.<\/p>\n

\n\tIf \u201cOne Battle After Another\u201d can manage to cross the $100 million domestic mark, it would also qualify for the Globes\u2019 Cinematic and Box Office Achievement category, which requires a film to earn $150 million worldwide and at least $100 million in the U.S. (or equivalent digital streaming metrics). The film has grossed more than $165 million globally but remains shy of the domestic threshold at $65 million. A submission in that race would open the possibility of 11 nominations (without an original song in the mix). Nonetheless, Anderson\u2019s latest may be the rare film that defies category lines with a blend of high-concept spectacle and political farce. <\/p>\n

\n\tWhether voters see it as an action epic, a biting comedy, or both, \u201cOne Battle After Another\u201d is positioned to dominate the season: one award, and one battle, after another.<\/p>\n
