{"id":238394,"date":"2025-10-25T03:45:12","date_gmt":"2025-10-25T03:45:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/238394\/"},"modified":"2025-10-25T03:45:12","modified_gmt":"2025-10-25T03:45:12","slug":"the-results-of-the-2025-municipal-election-in-calgary-are-now-official-calgary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/238394\/","title":{"rendered":"The results of the 2025 municipal election in Calgary are now official &#8211; Calgary"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/11493657\/serious-fatal-car-crashes-on-the-rise-halifax-3rd-straight-year\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">official election results<\/a> are in and Calgarians now know who the city\u2019s new mayor, council and members of the local school boards will be.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/1760811489_47_70c8fc80.png\" alt=\"\" style=\"position:absolute;width:1px;height:1px\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\"\/><\/p>\n<p>By law, the City of Calgary was required to submit the official numbers to the provincial government by noon on Oct. 24.<\/p>\n<p>The city says 349,815 people or 39.04 per cent of eligible voters cast a ballot in this year\u2019s municipal election.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s still low, but it\u2019s on the margins of where we normally have elections, which is in the 40 to 50 per cent range,\u201d said Duane Bratt, a political scientist at Mount Royal University.<\/p>\n<p>The results confirm that <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/11487087\/calgary-mayor-election-2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Jeromy Farkas will be Calgary\u2019s new mayor<\/a> after receiving 91,071 votes.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s 581 votes more than runner up Sonya Sharp.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>However, Sharp\u2019s campaign confirmed Friday it submitted a request for a recount of the official results under the Local Authorities Elections Act.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCalgarians deserve absolute confidence that every vote has been counted accurately and that the process is beyond reproach,\u201d Sharp said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-blockquote__content l-article__blockquoteContent\">\u201cThis request is about strengthening trust in the system.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sharp is requesting the recount on the grounds she is within 0.5 per cent of the winner but did not specify what polling stations she has requested officials to recount.<\/p>\n<p>According to provincial legislation, the recount must be complete by noon on Oct. 29.<\/p>\n<p>The new members of city council, according to the official results, will be:<\/p>\n<p>Ward 1 \u2013 Kim TyersWard 2 \u2013 Jennifer WynessWard 3 \u2013 Andrew YuleWard 4 \u2013 Daniel James (DJ) KellyWard 5 \u2013 Raj DhaliwalWard 6 \u2013 John PantazopoulosWard 7 \u2013 Myke AtkinsonWard 8 \u2013 Nathaniel SchmidtWard 9 \u2013 Harrison M. ClarkWard 10 \u2013 Andre ChabotWard 11 \u2013 Rob WardWard 12 \u2013 Mike JamiesonWard 13 \u2013 Dan McLeanWard 14 \u2013 Landon Johnston<\/p>\n<p>The new city council will include 10 political newcomers with just four incumbents returning: Jennifer Wyness, Raj Dhaliwal, Andre Chabot and Dan McLean.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"170\" height=\"225\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/1760811490_766_national.jpg\" alt=\"For news impacting Canada and around the world, sign up for breaking news alerts delivered directly to you when they happen.\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tGet breaking National news<\/p>\n<p>For news impacting Canada and around the world, sign up for breaking news alerts delivered directly to you when they happen.<\/p>\n<p>While the results were made official Friday, work has already been ongoing at city hall for the last two days getting the new councillors up to speed on their new jobs for the next four years.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s exciting to get to know everybody you\u2019re going to be working with,\u201d said Ward 11 Councillor-elect Rob Ward. \u201cGood information, just a lot to take in right now \u2014 but we\u2019ll get there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Councillors are subject to an intensive and mandatory orientation where they learn about roles and responsibilities of councillors and council, the council Code of Conduct, as well as key municipal plans, policies, and projects.<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019re also getting caught up on budgeting and financial information from city administration, as they will face a budget adjustment as one of the first major tasks in November.<\/p>\n<p>Ward 4 councillor-elect DJ Kelly said the week has been a \u201cvery fast turnaround process\u201d after winding down the campaign and now meeting his new colleagues.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re in the room getting our computers and our laptops, and they\u2019re set up in the room for three councillors at a time. So while the IT guys are trying to get us to set up our passwords and whatnot, we\u2019re meeting each other for the first time,\u201d Kelly told reporters Friday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-blockquote__content l-article__blockquoteContent\">\u201cIt\u2019s basically six days from election until when you\u2019re a city councillor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The City of Calgary said the official results in <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/11490393\/candidates-to-request-recounts-calgary-municipal-election\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Ward 12 reflect the outcome of a recount<\/a> conducted Thursday under the Local Authorities Election Act and they confirm that Mike Jamieson defeated Sarah Ferguson by a margin of 59 votes.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA nail-biter, I would say a rollercoaster,\u201d Jamieson told reporters ahead of his orientation on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m humbled Ward 12 has selected me.
