Former MIT women’s basketball coach and New York Liberty assistant Sonia Raman has been named head coach of the Seattle Storm, ESPN’s Shams Charania<\/a> reported Friday.<\/p>\n

The deal spans multiple years, Charania reported. Charania noted Raman will be the first Indian-American woman to coach a WNBA team.<\/p>\n

Raman led MIT women’s basketball from 2008 to 2020 and left as the winningest<\/a> coach in program history. She has since spent four seasons with the Memphis Grizzlies and one with the Liberty.<\/p>\n

She will now step in for former Storm head coach Noelle Quinn, whose contract was not renewed<\/a> following Seattle’s first-round elimination by the Las Vegas Aces during the 2025 WNBA playoffs.<\/p>\n

Raman previously worked on the coaching staffs at Tufts and Wellesley before taking over at MIT.<\/p>\n

MIT women’s basketball reached the DIII NCAA Tournament for the first time<\/a> under Raman, who led the program to back-to-back appearances following NEWMAC conference championships in 2018 and 2019.<\/p>\n

After going 91-45 over her final five seasons with MIT, Raman left to join the Grizzlies as an assistant coach ahead of the 2020-21 NBA season.<\/p>\n

Former Grizzlies coach Taylor Jenkins described<\/a> her at the time as having “a high basketball IQ and a tremendous ability to teach the game as well as a strong passion for the game.”<\/p>\n

Raman led the Grizzlies after four seasons to take on an assistant coaching job with the Liberty, who at the time had just won the 2024 WNBA championship.<\/p>\n

Her exit from New York after one season marks the continuation of coaching turnover for the Liberty, who parted ways with former head coach Sandy Brondello after their own first-round exit from the playoffs. Brondello has since reportedly<\/a> been hired as the first coach of the expansion Toronto Tempo.<\/p>\n

Raman will meanwhile replace Quinn, who initially took over for Dan Hughes during the 2021 season. <\/p>\n

Quinn parted ways with the Storm having claimed a 97-89 regular-season record (.522 win percentage) but just a 4-8 postseason mark.<\/p>\n

Under Quinn’s tenure, the Storm missed the playoffs in 2023 and lost in the first round in 2024 and 2025 despite fielding talented rosters featuring players like Jewell Loyd, Nneka Ogwumike, Skylar Diggins, Ezi Magbegor, Gabby Wiliams and Skylar Diggins.<\/p>\n

Expectations for the Storm will once more be high in 2026, especially given that the franchise is heading into the upcoming draft with two first-round picks<\/a>.
