{"id":239306,"date":"2025-10-25T13:49:15","date_gmt":"2025-10-25T13:49:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/239306\/"},"modified":"2025-10-25T13:49:15","modified_gmt":"2025-10-25T13:49:15","slug":"canada-caution-on-investment-to-defence-sector","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/239306\/","title":{"rendered":"Canada caution on investment to defence sector"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Prime Minister Mark Carney\u2019s promise to boost defence could deliver massive profit gains for companies but the big question is, where will the money come from?<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The Carney government recently announced plans to raise Canada\u2019s military budget to $150 billion by 2035 to meet a new NATO <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pm.gc.ca\/en\/news\/news-releases\/2025\/06\/25\/canada-joins-new-nato-defence-investment-pledg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.pm.gc.ca\/en\/news\/news-releases\/2025\/06\/25\/canada-joins-new-nato-defence-investment-pledg\" target=\"_blank\">target<\/a> of five per cent of GDP, the country\u2019s largest increase since the Second World War. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The current budget sits at $62.7 billion after Ottawa added $9 billion this year. Some economists are skeptical about Canada reaching its target. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cTo increase this defence spending to the level they\u2019ve committed to will ultimately lead to larger deficits unless they reduce spending elsewhere or raise revenues,\u201d Randall Bartlett, deputy chief economist at Desjardins told BNN Bloomberg in an interview.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Carney stated military investment <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/politics\/article\/canada-to-boost-defence-spending-to-2-of-gdp-this-fiscal-year\/#:~:text=Canada%20will%20boost%20defence%20spending,pledged%20during%20the%20federal%20election.\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/politics\/article\/canada-to-boost-defence-spending-to-2-of-gdp-this-fiscal-year\/#:~:text=Canada%20will%20boost%20defence%20spending,pledged%20during%20the%20federal%20election.\">will be funded<\/a> through a combination of accelerated government spending, prioritized domestic manufacturing, and aligned portions of the investment with existing or planned resilience-building initiatives.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Bartlett thinks it will be difficult for the government especially as Canada has struggled to reach two per cent of GDP on defence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Researchers at the conservative think tank Fraser Institute <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fraserinstitute.org\/commentary\/its-not-enough-just-make-military-commitments-we-must-also-execute-them#:~:text=To%20reach%202%20per%20cent,cut%20spending%20in%20other%20areas.\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.fraserinstitute.org\/commentary\/its-not-enough-just-make-military-commitments-we-must-also-execute-them#:~:text=To%20reach%202%20per%20cent,cut%20spending%20in%20other%20areas.\" target=\"_blank\">outline<\/a> three options: raise taxes, borrow money, or cut spending in other areas. Without these, Canada\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/cdhowe.org\/publication\/beware-the-false-comfort-in-pbo-deficit-projections\/#:~:text=The%20Parliamentary%20Budget%20Office%20is,ratio%20well%20above%2040%20percent.\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/cdhowe.org\/publication\/beware-the-false-comfort-in-pbo-deficit-projections\/#:~:text=The%20Parliamentary%20Budget%20Office%20is,ratio%20well%20above%2040%20percent.\" target=\"_blank\">deficit<\/a>, which is already projected at $65 billion this year could climb, eroding investor confidence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cThey\u2019re going to have to make a tough decision one way or another,\u201d Jake Fuss, director of fiscal studies for the Fraser Institute told BNN Bloomberg in an interview.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cPeople generally don\u2019t like when you reduce spending, people don\u2019t generally like when you raise taxes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Companies look forward to funding<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">MDA Space, a Brampton-based aerospace company, which already works with the government, says additional contracts will give business a major boost, which is necessary for Canadian companies. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cI think the commitment to spend more on defence is excellent,\u201d Mike Greenley, CEO of MDA Space told BNN Bloomberg in an interview. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cIt was a precondition, I feel, for overall Canadian trade and export globally that Canada carry its weight and do its part in overall defence of not only our country, but in our participation with allies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Publicly traded defence companies, like MDA Space, Bombardier, CAE Inc. and Calian, are also well-positioned to capitalize through government contracts. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cWe have over a $20 billion pipeline of opportunity over the next five years, which is global in nature and highly commercial,\u201d said Greenley. <\/p>\n<p>Where could the funding come from?<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The Fraser analysis states the government could raise taxes but that inhibits economic growth and the prosperity of Canadians by reducing the incentives to work, save, invest, or start a business. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Another option is borrowing, which the Fraser Institute states can burden future generations with debt repayment, likely through eventual tax hikes. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cThe government needs to move away from borrowing or tax hikes and instead reprioritize spending,\u201d said Bartlett. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">There could also be cuts to social service programs.
