{"id":239918,"date":"2025-10-25T20:28:11","date_gmt":"2025-10-25T20:28:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/239918\/"},"modified":"2025-10-25T20:28:11","modified_gmt":"2025-10-25T20:28:11","slug":"a-new-quasi-moon-has-been-discovered-near-earth-and-will-stick-around-for-another-60-years","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/239918\/","title":{"rendered":"A New &#8216;Quasi-Moon&#8217; Has Been Discovered Near Earth and Will Stick Around For Another 60 Years"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>NEED TO KNOW<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">A new &#8220;quasi-moon&#8221; named 2025 PN7 has been discovered, according to a newly-released paper<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Scientists out of a Hawaii observatory reportedly discovered the new quasi-moon on Aug. 29<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">It is believed that the new moon will stick around for another 60 years<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">A new \u201cquasi-moon\u201d has been found near Earth, but it won\u2019t stick around for long.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The asteroid, named 2025 PN7, will join Earth in orbit until 2083, according to a paper published last month in <a href=\"https:\/\/iopscience.iop.org\/article\/10.3847\/2515-5172\/ae028f\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:IOP Science;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">IOP Science<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Scientists out of the Pan-STARRs observatory in Hawaii discovered the new quasi-moon on Aug. 29, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/09\/16\/science\/earth-quasi-moon-2025-pn7\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:CNN;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">CNN<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/US\/earth-moons-orbiting-astronomers-explain-quasi-moon\/story?id=126770774\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:ABC News;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">ABC News<\/a>. It is believed that PN7 has been a quasi-moon for an estimated 60 years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Carlos de la Fuentes, astronomer at the Complutense University of Madrid, who co-authored the study, said there were \u201cno real hints about its origins, only speculations,\u201d according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/2025\/10\/21\/what-are-earths-two-moons-is-there-an-asteroid-moons-until-2083-asteroid-2025-pn7-two-moons-2083\/86817562007\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:USA Today;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">USA Today<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Earth\u2019s quasi-moons are not actually moons, but asteroids, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.planetary.org\/articles\/the-quasi-moons-of-earth\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:The Planetary Society;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">The Planetary Society<\/a>. They are only temporary, and will eventually leave Earth\u2019s orbit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">There are six other known quasi-satellites near the planet, according to astrophysicists with <a href=\"https:\/\/news.northeastern.edu\/2025\/10\/22\/earth-second-moon-astrophysicists-talk-discovery\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Northeastern University;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Northeastern University<\/a>. PN7 is the seventh.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Northeastern University astrophysicist Jonathan Blazek said the new quasi-moon is \u201croughly the size of a small office building,\u201d according to Northeastern Global News.
