Sparked by an enrichment class in his early school days where he first learned the craft, photography became a lifelong passion for Photography host David Makela. He shares his talents in SPACES, Sudbury\u2019s algorithm-free social network<\/p>\n
Sudbury SPACES<\/a> fans, please welcome one of your Photography space<\/a> hosts, David Makela.<\/p>\n SPACES\u00a0is Village Media\u2019s homegrown, hyper-local social site, where you can meet friends and neighbours and\u00a0learn more about your community.<\/p>\n SEE:\u00a0IN PHOTOS: SPACES takes over Good Earth Coffeehouse in Sudbury<\/a><\/p>\n Sudbury\u2019s Photography space<\/a> already has almost 300 members, with several keen\u00a0local photographers sharing their snaps of Sudbury and area and admiring each others\u2019 photos as well.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s a nice, friendly space to share and have your photos be seen,\u201d reflected Makela. \u201cIt\u2019s a positive community, with none of the negativity and picking fights that you see on other larger social media platforms. I am enjoying it.\u201d<\/p>\n SEE:\u00a0MEET YOUR HOST: Sudbury realtor helps make sense of the market, in SPACES<\/a><\/p>\n Makela caught the photography bug in an enrichment class in grade school, when he had the opportunity to take photos and develop his own prints in a darkroom. Sadly, the bug had to lie dormant until he received a point and shoot camera later in life and was able to shoot and take his photos in to be developed.<\/p>\n \u201cThe cost of film and developing limited me until the digital age, when my photography bug started to really develop, ultimately taking hold around 2010,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n SEE:\u00a0IN PHOTOS | Best of Sudbury SPACES: Wings, whiskers and city streets<\/a><\/p>\n Makela is an outdoorsy guy, never happier than when he is outside hiking, hunting, fishing, boating\u00a0and camping, and his trusty camera is always at his side in these outdoor adventures.<\/p>\n SEE:\u00a0Sudbury.com wants you \u2014 to host one of our new spaces<\/a><\/p>\n \u201cMost of my photos aren\u2019t planned, just something that happens when I am doing these other things,\u201d he said. \u201cSometimes you get lucky and see something different, or an awesome composition.\u201d<\/p>\n Makela added, \u201cI\u2019m not one for taking posed photos, I hate that! Most of my photos are of the natural world, although of course I take photos of the grandkids. I take photos that mean something to me, for myself really. It has been fun sharing them on SPACES, too.\u201d<\/p>\n SEE:\u00a0Photos: They came, schmoozed over coffee and connected at Twiggs Coffee Roasters in Sudbury<\/a><\/p>\n Makela is mainly a self-taught photographer, although he did take a one-year online course with an email critique once a week, which taught him the basics of exposure and composition. \u201cWhen I went from a point and shoot to a digital DSLR, that was a bit of a learning curve,\u201d he admitted. \u201cI do believe that some things can\u2019t be taught, like composition. You can get better at it, but you have to have something there to start with, I think.\u201d<\/p>\n Makela’s photos recently have been beautiful shots of autumn scenes<\/a> in the area, and they have garnered some nice reactions, with plenty of likes<\/a> and comments, plus ideas for more shots<\/a>.<\/p>\n There are several other photographers who also post frequently, and Makela tries to like and comment on their work as well. \u201cGeorge and Paul post a lot,\u201d he said. \u201cPaul is in Sudbury Shutterbugs as well, he has a good eye and is learning a lot.\u201d<\/p>\n SEE:\u00a0MEET YOUR HOST: Local photographer showcases Sudbury\u2019s beauty on SPACES<\/a><\/p>\n In the future, Makela would love to see even more participation in the Sudbury Photography space, and an opportunity for some constructive feedback. \u201cIt has great potential, it is such a positive space,\u201d he said. \u201cIt would be nice if we had some more advanced photographers on there, willing to help people out with questions and comments, to help people get better.\u201d<\/p>\n SEE:\u00a0Sudbury now has its very own social network: SPACES<\/a><\/p>\n He finished, \u201cIt\u2019s a really nice place, very supportive.
