{"id":240731,"date":"2025-10-26T05:43:16","date_gmt":"2025-10-26T05:43:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/240731\/"},"modified":"2025-10-26T05:43:16","modified_gmt":"2025-10-26T05:43:16","slug":"meet-the-4-rookies-joining-edmonton-city-council-as-final-vote-numbers-released-edmonton","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/240731\/","title":{"rendered":"Meet the 4 rookies joining Edmonton city council as final vote numbers released &#8211; Edmonton"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Four rookies will be joining the eight incumbents <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/11487773\/2025-edmonton-election-city-council\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">who were elected to Edmonton city council this week<\/a> in the municipal election.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/1761403809_563_70c8fc80.png\" alt=\"\" style=\"position:absolute;width:1px;height:1px\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\"\/><\/p>\n<p>In Ward Ipiihkoohkanipiaohtsi, transit worker Jon Morgan beat out former councillor Jennifer Rice.<\/p>\n<p>Morgan has worked for the Edmonton Transit Service for nearly 19 years in roles such as LRT inspector and control room superintendent<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019s been active in his southwest Edmonton ward, volunteering for the Heritage Point Community League, Johnny Bright School council and as a youth soccer coach.<\/p>\n<p>As a new councillor, Morgan is getting up to speed but already knows what his first priority will be.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor this area, it\u2019s going to be infrastructure. We have pretty high density here in the southwest \u2014 especially in the Heritage Valley,\u201d Morgan explained.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-blockquote__content l-article__blockquoteContent\">\u201cI\u2019m really concerned about the roads in this area, really concerned about transit \u2014 mobility in general.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This is Morgan\u2019s second time running for council after losing in 2021, in a ward he says is largely split north and south \u2014 between existing, established communities north of Anthony Henday Drive and new areas still under construction towards the outskirts of the city.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSidewalks are really in disrepair in a lot of our neighbourhoods up there (in the north).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On Friday, Edmonton Elections released the final, official numbers from the election this past Monday.<\/p>\n<p>The councillor who received both the greatest number of votes and also won by the largest percentage was Michael Janz in Ward papastew.<\/p>\n<p>The former Edmonton Public Schools trustee is entering his second term on city council after receiving 10,620 votes \u2014 56.87 per cent of the 18,675 ballots cast in that central Edmonton ward.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-video__image\" alt=\"Click to play video: 'Mayoral runner-up calls for election review, Edmonton Elections says process was sound'\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/6P_ELECTION_FALLOUT.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\"   data-\/><\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t2:03<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tMayoral runner-up calls for election review, Edmonton Elections says process was sound\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>Not all wards had equal turnout.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>The highest number of ballots cast was in the west end ward of sipiwiyiniwak, where there was no incumbent after\u00a0Sarah Hamilton elected not to run for council again.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"170\" height=\"225\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/1761403811_316_national.jpg\" alt=\"For news impacting Canada and around the world, sign up for breaking news alerts delivered directly to you when they happen.\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tGet breaking National news<\/p>\n<p>For news impacting Canada and around the world, sign up for breaking news alerts delivered directly to you when they happen.<\/p>\n<p>Hamilton\u2019s departure left an opening for new councillor-elect Thu Parmar.<\/p>\n<p>Parmar has worked in management at Alberta Health and in the private sector for pharmaceutical companies.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\tMore on Politics<br \/>\n\t\t\tMore videos\n\t\t<\/p>\n<p>Most recently, she was the vice-president of the Alberta and N.W.T. chapter of the Canadian Red Cross \u2014 a job she was preparing to return to after Monday\u2019s initial vote count that had her in second place, six votes behind Better Edmonton candidate Darrell Friesen.<\/p>\n<p>Seven people ran for the open seat, and the top contenders came so close after the first round of hand counting, election officials said the ballots all needed to be examined again.<\/p>\n<p>In the end, Parmar won with 6,667 votes \u2014 30.36 per cent of the 21,962 cast.<\/p>\n<p>She\u2019s previously volunteered in several roles, including president, at the Cameron Heights Community League and is a recipient of the Queen\u2019s Platinum Jubilee Medal.<\/p>\n<p>She said she heard a lot of concerns while she knocked on more than 35,000 doors in the campaign, saying she wants to rebuild trust with Edmontonians and city council.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019d love to be able to increase engagement, to increase transparency and make it easy for people to reach out to the government.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The ward with the fewest votes cast was O-day\u2019min that encompasses downtown and central Edmonton, where 12,443 ballots were recorded. There, incumbent Anne Stevenson was re-elected with 6,269 votes, or 50.38 per cent of the vote.<\/p>\n<p>Over in pih\u00easiwin in southwest Edmonton, voters selected an Edmonton Police Service staff sergeant and former union leader as their representative.<\/p>\n<p>Better Edmonton candidate Michael Elliott, who won by 7,984 votes, capturing 41 per cent of the support, hopes to put his policing background to good use in improving public safety.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe first steps I want to see, from my perspective, is address the relationship between city council and EPS. He\u2019s the founder of Ross Flats Vintage Apparel and was previously the CEO of Sport Edmonton and the president, CEO and owner of the Edmonton Stingers basketball team.<\/p>\n<p>Clarke has sat on several boards, including Explore Edmonton, Sport Central, KidsSport Edmonton, the Royal Glenora Club and Alberta Basketball Association.<\/p>\n<p>The Better Edmonton candidate wants to improve collaboration and says he\u2019s open to working with anyone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHave the approach \u2018we\u2019re all here together, we\u2019re all on one team. We all have the best interests of Edmonton at heart.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reed also plans to maintain an office in his ward throughout his term, to improve engagement with residents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m super excited. I\u2019m pumped to do this. I can\u2019t believe it\u2019s happening, but I\u2019m ready to get started.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rounding out the group in council chambers will be Andrew Knack, who will now step up to the mayor\u2019s chair after receiving 78,519 votes \u2014 37.98 per cent of the ballots cast for mayor.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-video__image\" alt=\"Click to play video: 'Andrew Knack elected next mayor of Edmonton'\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/1761457396_111_6P-KNACK-COVERAGE.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\"   data-\/><\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t4:40<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tAndrew Knack elected next mayor of Edmonton\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>In Edmonton, the city estimated there were 679,830 eligible voters and of those, 205,758 cast ballots \u2014 a voter turnout of 30.27 per cent.
