Christopher Bell (+37 points to the cutline) and Kyle Larson (+36) are both in transfer spots.<\/p>\n<p>    <a class=\"Link\" aria-label=\"Martinsville Cup starting lineup: William Byron claims pole \" href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcsports.com\/nascar\/news\/martinsville-cup-starting-lineup-william-byron-claims-pole\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"Image\" alt=\"NASCAR Cup Series Xfinity 500 - Practice\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/1761475753_539_\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p><\/a><\/p>\n<p>William Byron is in a must-win situation to advance to next weekend\u2019s championship race at Phoenix.<\/p>\n<p>Those below the cutline are William Byron (-36), reigning champion Joey Logano (-38), Ryan Blaney (-47) and Chase Elliott (-62).<\/p>\n<p>NBC and Peacock will have the coverage from the historic half-mile track in Southern Virginia. Countdown to Green begins at 1:30 p.m. ET. Race coverage begins at 2 p.m. ET.<\/p>\n<p>Here is what to watch for in today\u2019s race:<\/p>\n<p>Desperate situations can lead to desperate actions<\/p>\n<p>Three years ago, Ross Chastain rode the wall on the final two corners of the last lap in a since-outlawed move to earn the final transfer spot to the title race and eliminate Hamlin.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, Bell was penalized for riding the wall in the final corner of the last lap and that cost him a spot in the title race. But questions emerged about the actions of some drivers to help either Bell or Byron secure the final transfer spot. NASCAR suspended nine people from three different teams and fined those organizations a total of $600,000, among other penalties.<\/p>\n<p>    <a class=\"Link\" aria-label=\"Pressure builds at Martinsville on drivers seeking to make NASCAR Cup title race\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcsports.com\/nascar\/news\/pressure-builds-at-martinsville-on-drivers-seeking-to-make-nascar-cup-title-race\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"Image\" alt=\"NASCAR Cup Series Xfinity 500 - Practice\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/1761475754_18_\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Chase Elliott, who must win to advance, said: \u201cI look forward to whatever (Sunday) brings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>NASCAR made it clear to crew chiefs two weeks ago at Las Vegas that it will be closely monitoring teams in what they say on the radio and their actions on track.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can say anything that helps your driver in their position and that\u2019s it,\u201d Brad Moran, NASCAR\u2019s managing director of the Cup Series, told NBC Sports after meeting with crew chiefs at Las Vegas.<\/p>\n<p>Tires could make a difference<\/p>\n<p>Goodyear has brought a new left-side tire that is intended to fall-off more over a run than the previous tire used at this track.<\/p>\n<p>Hamlin applauded Goodyear for bringing the tire after Saturday\u2019s practice.<\/p>\n<p>    <a class=\"Link\" aria-label=\"Recent runs have Kyle Larson confident heading to Martinsville \" href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcsports.com\/nascar\/news\/recent-runs-have-kyle-larson-confident-heading-to-martinsville\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"Image\" alt=\"AUTO: OCT 18 NASCAR Cup Series YellaWood 500\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/1761475754_744_\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Kyle Larson holds the final transfer spot heading into Sunday\u2019s Round of 8 finale on NBC and Peacock.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought the tire was good,\u201d Hamlin said. \u201cThe tire Goodyear brought here was a good choice and what they developed is a throwback to 15 years ago. You definitely have to manage the car. All the drivers are going to have to do their job to make it last, so we will see how it goes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Said Byron, who starts on the pole, about the tire: \u201cThis is more of a management aspect. I don\u2019t think it\u2019s going to do like what it did at Bristol, where you just have to pit all the time. But I think you\u2019re just going to suffer, you know, in terms of lap time and positions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Locked out?<\/p>\n<p>Joe Gibbs Racing has secured two of the four spots in the title race. It\u2019s possible that Team Penske \u2014 which has won the past three Cup titles at Phoenix \u2014 or Hendrick Motorsports could be locked out of the next weekend\u2019s championship race.<\/p>\n<p>Blaney and Logano enter in must-win situations for Team Penske. Blaney has won the past two Martinsville playoff races but starts 31st in today\u2019s race.
