{"id":241179,"date":"2025-10-26T10:50:30","date_gmt":"2025-10-26T10:50:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/241179\/"},"modified":"2025-10-26T10:50:30","modified_gmt":"2025-10-26T10:50:30","slug":"celtics-opening-night-was-extra-special-for-2-wnba-players","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/241179\/","title":{"rendered":"Celtics opening night was extra special for 2 WNBA players"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">BOSTON \u2014 The <a href=\"http:\/\/celticsblog.com\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Boston Celtics<\/a>\u2019 season opener against the Philadelphia 76ers featured plenty of big-name attendees: former Celtics players Paul Pierce, Dana Barros, and Leon Powe; alpine ski star Lindsey Vonn, Patriots player Anfernee Jennings, and others.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">But this time, a slew of Connecticut Sun youngsters were also in attendance, with forward <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sbnation.com\/wnba\/2025\/2\/12\/24364251\/aaliyah-edwards-unrivaled-1v1-tournament-wnba-washington-mystics-breanna-stewart\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Aaliyah Edwards<\/a> and guard <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sbnation.com\/2025\/4\/13\/24407251\/2025-wnba-draft-prospects-saniya-rivers-aziaha-james-nc-state\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Saniya Rivers<\/a> seated courtside (and mic\u2019d up) for the match-up.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">Rivers is fresh off her rookie campaign with the Sun, in which she established herself as one of the league\u2019s elite defenders and two-way guards. Edwards, a second-year, midseason acquisition, came off the bench to bolster the team\u2019s frontcourt depth. Both appear to be critical parts of Connecticut\u2019s young core moving forward.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">Both Rivers and Edwards told SB Nation they were thrilled to be in the house for the Celtics\u2019 home opener, which the Celtics dropped 117-116 to the 76ers on a last-second play.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">But for Rivers, the occasion was especially momentous, as Wednesday night marked her first time attending an NBA game.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">\u201cThis is amazing,\u201d she said before tip-off. \u201cI\u2019m blessed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">Rivers might not have ever gotten to watch an NBA game in person, but she\u2019s played in her fair share of NBA arenas. Most notably, she laced up at TD Garden herself when the Sun faced the Indiana Fever in July, in what\u2019s become an annual Boston game.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">And, the 22-year-old guard recalled the Sun\u2019s sell-out game at TD Garden fondly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">\u201cI was overstimulated,\u201d she said with a smile. \u201cWhen I was in South Carolina my freshman year, they held 10,000 people, so that was probably the most I\u2019ve ever played in front of. Seeing that this arena was full when we played Indiana, it was crazy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">That atmosphere game also left her feeling fulfilled about the future of women\u2019s basketball.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">\u201cThat\u2019s the most important part \u2014 seeing that we\u2019re expanding,\u201d Rivers said. \u201cSo I think it was great for our league.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">In attendance with Rivers and Edwards was Sun general manager Morgan Tuck, who SB Nation sat down with earlier this week for an extensive interview earlier this week.<\/p>\n<p>A homecoming (of sorts) for Aaliyah Edwards<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">For <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sbnation.com\/wnba\/983868\/wnba-trade-connecticut-sun-washington-mystics-aaliyah-edwards-jacy-sheldon\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Aaliyah Edwards<\/a> \u2014 who starred at the University of Connecticut for four years \u2014 it\u2019s been fun to be back in the Northeast. After a standout career in Storrs, Edwards was drafted by the Washington Mystics in 2024, and her Connecticut chapter seemed behind her.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">But, in August she was traded to the Sun in what became a full-circle moments.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">\u201cWe were really excited that we got to get her, honestly,\u201d said Sun general manager Morgan Tuck, who was also in attendance for Wednesday\u2019s game. \u201cI wish we could have gotten her a little bit earlier in the season, but glad that we got her before the deadline.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">Edwards said that since arriving in Connecticut, tons of UConn fans have approached her at games to let her know how excited they were to see her back in New England.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">\u201cI didn\u2019t think I\u2019d be back playing Connecticut so soon,\u201d Edwards said. \u201cBut I\u2019m grateful to wear Connecticut across my chest again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">But, unlike Rivers, Edwards wasn\u2019t on the roster for the Sun-Fever match-up at TD Garden, as it took place before her midseason trade.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">\u201cI would love to be a part of this,\u201d Edwards said of playing at TD Garden. \u201cThis atmosphere and this energy that they bring each and every night, it\u2019s cool. Home opener for the NBA season \u2014 to support our brother team, it feels amazing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">That chance could be coming.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">Next season, the Sun are slated to once again play at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut, and will presumably have another annual TD Garden game.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">But after that, the future is uncertain. The franchise is up for sale, and though Boston is a potential destination, the WNBA has pushed back on the Mohegan Tribe selling the team to a Boston-based group led by former Celtics minority owner Steve Pagliuca.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">Hartford, Connecticut, and Houston, Texas, have both emerged as prospective relocation possibilities, with ownership groups in both cities hoping to secure the team.
