{"id":241432,"date":"2025-10-26T13:33:08","date_gmt":"2025-10-26T13:33:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/241432\/"},"modified":"2025-10-26T13:33:08","modified_gmt":"2025-10-26T13:33:08","slug":"gop-grows-uneasy-over-voters-health-care-premiums-amid-shutdown-standoff","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/241432\/","title":{"rendered":"GOP grows uneasy over voters\u2019 health care premiums amid shutdown standoff"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmh524riw003826nr38jd165b@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Anxiety is rising among congressional Republicans that their party has no plan to address a critical health care deadline this fall that will result in spiking costs for millions of Americans \u2013 the issue at the heart of the deepening government shutdown crisis.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmh53wtwv00013b6nlstcg3kf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            And some of those GOP members are offering a stark warning to their own leaders: Doing nothing could cost them their full control of Congress in next November\u2019s midterms, calling for a plan that would address expiring enhanced Obamacare tax credits to be swiftly advanced once the government eventually reopens.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmh53wtwv00023b6nxj908m0e@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI think the reality is, if costs go up under our control, it could have an impact on us,\u201d Rep. David Valadao, a vulnerable GOP lawmaker from California, told CNN about the political effects of the health care fight. \u201cI get that there\u2019s some in leadership who don\u2019t like hearing it but there\u2019s no denying it.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmh53wtwv00033b6nbw6tesx6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cJust watching rates go up and pointing fingers is not what we should be doing in our position,\u201d he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmh53wtwv00043b6n4m2la4ug@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Valadao is among dozens of rank-and-file House and Senate members who have begun drafting their own ideas about how to deal with the expiring enhanced Affordable Care Act subsidies, which help millions of Americans afford insurance. Many of those GOP members \u2014 predominantly from battleground seats \u2014 are also directly urging their leadership and the White House to do something to make sure the tax credits keep flowing at year\u2019s end.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmh53wtwv00053b6n2ibtxjy7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Democrats have made extending the subsidies central to their demands in the shutdown fight, blocking a dozen attempts by Senate Republicans to pass a House bill to reopen the government until November 21 until there\u2019s an agreement on health care. Most of these at-risk Republicans are in lockstep with the GOP leadership position that there should be no negotiations until after Democrats vote to reopen the government.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmh53wtwv00063b6nsxaxx89p@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Some, though, are calling for a change in course.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmh53wtwv00073b6nw1k1zrzc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI think it\u2019s time for both Republicans and Democrats to be sitting down together to talk about, how do we end this impasse?\u201d Sen. Lisa Murkowski, a moderate Alaska Republican, said\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmh53wtwv00083b6nyevrkso5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Asked if President Donald Trump should begin to get directly involved to end the impasse, something <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/10\/21\/politics\/republicans-trump-government-shutdown-deal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">he has resisted so far<\/a>, Murkowski said: \u201cThat would certainly help.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmh53wtwv00093b6nopebdgb2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI think everyone recognizes that the president plays a very significant role in something like a shutdown,\u201d she said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmh53wtwv000a3b6n43td197n@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Party leaders are keenly aware of the pressure.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/gettyimages-2242435765.jpg\" alt=\"Senate Majority Leader John Thune speaks to reporters alongside Senate Republican Leadership outside of the West Wing of the White House on October 21.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1600\" width=\"2400\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmh53wtwv000b3b6nk8motu4m@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Inside the US Capitol this week, Senate Majority Leader John Thune sat down with a small group of senators to discuss potential solutions to the problem. One participant said the session amounted to touching gloves so that when Democrats end the shutdown, Republicans are positioned and prepared to negotiate on the health care issues that Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and his party are demanding.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmh53wtwv000c3b6nfjfbg197@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI go to bed at night thinking about health care. Of course, I\u2019m always thinking about what we can do to find a solution,\u201d Sen. Bill Cassidy, a Republican of Louisiana who chairs the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, said as he left the meeting. \u201cI say that but it\u2019s more pointed forward, because we need Schumer to open the government.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmh53wtwv000d3b6n1va5adf8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Still, as a critical deadline approaches on November 1, when open enrollment launches, Trump and the GOP have no consensus on how to handle the issue.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmh53wtwv000e3b6nwiggm073@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Republicans are in a bind: GOP leaders have shut down any talk about how to handle the subsidies during the funding fight, since Democrats have put those subsidies at the center of their demands. But the unexpectedly long stalemate has prevented Republicans from working through a solution on what is one of the diciest issues in Washington at the moment \u2013 especially since extending the subsidies even in the short-term could cost tens of billions of dollars.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmh53wtwv000f3b6ntah1cv7d@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It\u2019s not clear how long that position can hold. Several prominent Republicans close to Trump \u2014 from Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene to Missouri Sen. Josh Hawley \u2014 have been increasingly vocal in their warnings that failing to act will cause pain for millions of Trump voters.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmh53wtwv000g3b6nrw96e4cq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIf we don\u2019t do anything their premiums are gonna almost double. They\u2019re too high right now. We\u2019re talking about working people,\u201d Hawley said. \u201cSo it\u2019s just, we\u2019ve got to do something. This is totally unaffordable.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmh53wtwv000h3b6n4ymk91y5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Some members, including GOP Rep. Jeff Van Drew of New Jersey, have made their case directly to Trump, arguing to him that the party\u2019s own working class voters rely on that money to pay their health care coverage. In a recent phone call with Trump, Van Drew told CNN that the president made clear \u201che doesn\u2019t want to hurt people.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmh53wtwv000i3b6nw54hnioj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cHis concern is, is there something better we can do?\u201d Van Drew said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmh55noni00103b6nq2kq4860@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In response, the New Jersey Republican told Trump there was but that he\u2019s worried it\u2019d take too long for a fix, telling the president: \u201cI don\u2019t think we\u2019re going to get it done in a matter of weeks.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmh53wtwv000j3b6n6gzjx7ip@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Van Drew added that he agrees with Greene\u2019s recent attacks against their own party for lacking a plan on an issue that impacts working class voters. If Republicans fail to find a solution, the New Jersey Republican warned: \u201cIt\u2019s morally bankrupt not to do it and it is politically stupid.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/gettyimages-2242507285.jpg\" alt=\"The US Capitol on October 23.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1600\" width=\"2400\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmh53wtwv000k3b6nt0s4wh3y@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Yet the fate of that policy is highly uncertain in the GOP, especially in the House. House Republican leaders are privately skeptical that their sharply divided party can agree to an Obamacare extension this year, and believe any overhaul would be hard to accomplish in just a few weeks, according to multiple people involved in those discussions.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmh53wtwv000l3b6npq3v6dfb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Some in GOP leadership are doubtful that those spiking premiums \u2013 which are set to <a href=\"https:\/\/nam11.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.kff.org%2Faffordable-care-act%2Faca-marketplace-premium-payments-would-more-than-double-on-average-next-year-if-enhanced-premium-tax-credits-expire%2F&amp;data=05%7C02%7CMegan.Trimble%40cnn.com%7Ca8cce5c7f327498e282408de130e8065%7C0eb48825e8714459bc72d0ecd68f1f39%7C0%7C0%7C638969150153139000%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=2KV2BNV07Y5U%2BDgxdUAiXWU3YZt3D26dLLHvWoLDSV8%3D&amp;reserved=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">more than double nationally<\/a>, according to KFF \u2013 will be the dominant issue in the elections next November. And they know they could face a rebellion from their right flank over any votes on the Affordable Care Act.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmh53wtwv000m3b6nxqdoshay@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI think it\u2019s an issue where everybody realizes we have to do something,\u201d one congressional GOP campaign operative said, while noting that Republicans will likely need major changes to get support from across the conference. \u201cIt\u2019s a trigger for the base, hearing \u2018Obamacare.\u2019\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmh53wtwv000n3b6n428eo9hd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Some House conservatives, meanwhile, are calling for dramatic overhauls of the program that would be unlikely to get Democratic support.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmh53wtwv000o3b6nctmc748d@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe whole thing is a nightmare and I think we better ought to look at redoing this thing,\u201d said Rep. Tim Burchett of Tennessee, who said he does not support simply extending the enhanced subsidies. \u201cI want to make sure whatever we do has some fiscal soundness to it.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmh53wtwv000p3b6n4a1r7mpl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Sen. Tommy Tuberville, an Alabama Republican, predicted that Americans would be \u201cscreaming bloody murder\u201d at the cost to the US economy if Congress agrees to simply extend the subsidies.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmh53wtwv000q3b6n8ge7pe8a@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            He acknowledged that ending enhanced ACA tax credits would make premiums for his constituents increase, but he lamented that former President Obama\u2019s signature health care law has \u201cruined our health care system\u201d and attempting to subsidize costs for those in need has \u201creally put us in harm\u2019s way.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmh53wtwv000r3b6ngf2obprc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Still, other Republicans are willing to consider an extension \u2013 including Sen. David McCormick, a Pennsylvania freshman who suggested he\u2019d back setting stricter income limits on which families stand to benefit from the subsidies.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmh53wtwv000s3b6nbld6dbwo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cBut certainly I\u2019m worried about working families and what the premium expenses are going to mean to them,\u201d McCormick said in an interview.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmh53wtwv000t3b6n5j8vqe8r@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Even the Republicans who do support a short-term extension have made clear they would not support it indefinitely. They want to see major reforms to the Obamacare marketplace, which they argue is being propped up by billions of dollars of federal subsidies.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmh53wtwv000u3b6n6szmwuu0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe\u2019ve got to address this in the immediate term,\u201d Rep. Mike Lawler of New York told CNN, who backs a short-term extension because he wants to \u201cmake sure people don\u2019t see a sticker shock.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmh53wtwv000v3b6n0nmy5s1i@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe don\u2019t want to see people\u2019s health care premiums rise, and Republicans, writ large, want to reduce the cost of health care. Nobody is disputing that.
