{"id":2417,"date":"2025-07-17T09:29:10","date_gmt":"2025-07-17T09:29:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/2417\/"},"modified":"2025-07-17T09:29:10","modified_gmt":"2025-07-17T09:29:10","slug":"popular-hiking-trail-remains-closed-due-to-moose-that-refuses-to-move","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/2417\/","title":{"rendered":"Popular hiking trail remains closed due to moose that refuses to move"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Goodman Mountain trail in Tupper Lake, New York, remains closed for yet another day due to a bull moose taking up residence in the area and refusing to budge, according to a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/dec.ny.gov\/news\/press-releases\/2025\/7\/dec-reminds-hikers-goodman-mountain-trail-remains-closed\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:press release;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">press release<\/a> by New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC).<\/p>\n<p>Officials closed the trail on June 6 after reported sightings of the moose, which appears to be exhibiting \u201cunusual behaviour\u201d that could be the result of an underlying illness. According to a DEC veterinary report from July 10, illnesses in moose can sometimes make them unpredictable or more likely to act abnormally, increasing the risk of dangerous encounters with people.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBased on these observations, and the terrain, the trail will remain closed to protect the moose and ensure public safety in the event of a close encounter with the public,\u201d reads an excerpt from the DEC press release.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMoose are large animals, and while no signs of aggression have been observed, moose can be dangerous if approached too closely.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Officials say they will continue to monitor the situation, and the trail will remain closed until it is deemed safe again.<\/p>\n<p>A reminder to respect wildlife<\/p>\n<p>The incident serves as a reminder to keep a safe distance from wildlife when on the trails this summer. Some animals may display unusual or unpredictable behaviour that can pose a risk to human safety. Others can become startled and charge, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theweathernetwork.com\/en\/news\/nature\/habitats\/woman-fined-usd88-000-after-kids-collect-seashells-on-beach\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:leading to injury;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">leading to injury<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/parks.canada.ca\/pn-np\/ns\/cbreton\/securite-safety\/enpleinenature-keepitwild\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Parks Canada;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Parks Canada<\/a> recommends keeping at least three bus-lengths, or 30 metres, away from any moose you encounter.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/parks.canada.ca\/pn-np\/ab\/banff\/visit\/faune-wildlife\/espace-space\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:It is illegal;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">It is illegal<\/a> to feed, entice, or disturb wildlife in a Canadian national park.
