Following the theme \u2018Designing Future Society for Our Lives,\u2019 the expo aimed to promote the principles behind the UN Sustainable Development Goals, whose target achievement year is 2030. The event also sought to advance <a href=\"https:\/\/archinect.com\/news\/tag\/336\/japan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Japan\u2019s<\/a> Society 5.0, which seeks to embrace information systems and integrate digital and physical space.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/archinect.gumlet.io\/uploads\/93\/932ee1c71dc3546170ee981b4273a4fb.jpg?auto=compress%2Cformat&amp;enlarge=true&amp;w=1028\" class=\"floatbox\" data-size=\"1028x771\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/932ee1c71dc3546170ee981b4273a4fb.jpg\"  \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Grand Ring. Image credit: Wikimedia Commons user Abasaa (public domain)<\/p>\n<p>The expo site was anchored by a giant wooden Grand Ring, <a href=\"https:\/\/archinect.com\/news\/article\/150422408\/sou-fujimoto-shares-new-photos-of-expo-2025-osaka-kansai-master-plan-under-construction\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">designed by Sou Fujimoto<\/a>. The 2,000-foot-diameter structure served as the main circulatory route for the exhibition and was designed to evoke a sense of \u201cunity in diversity.\u201d The form of the ring was inspired by the Stage of Kiyomizu temple in Kyoto and other historic examples of Japanese timber architecture.<\/p>\n<p>In total, 161 countries and associations delivered pavilions for the expo. Below, we have rounded up six such pavilions that offer a sample of the architectural forms on display across the expo. Image credit: German Expo Pavilion \/ Hotaka MatsumuraGermany Pavilion<\/p>\n<p>Designed by a team spanning LAVA &#8211; Laboratory for Visionary Architecture, facts and fiction, and landscape by <a href=\"https:\/\/archinect.com\/henninglarsen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Henning Larsen<\/a>, the Germany Pavilion was titled \u2018Wa! Germany.\u2019 In Japanese, \u2018wa\u2019 has three meanings: circularity, harmony, and an expression of wonder. The design of the pavilion seeks to showcase the potential of circular and sustainable construction, consisting of seven round structural elements made of wood. Image credit: German Expo Pavilion \/ Hotaka Matsumura<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As a holistic entity, the Pavilion marries nature and technology, biosphere and human-made technosphere into one unique visitor experience,&#8221; the team said. &#8220;In the draft, two ensembles of cylindrical structural elements framing the curated exhibition area and hospitality area join to merge into a freely accessible green park area. Image credit: German Expo Pavilion \/ Hotaka MatsumuraSaudi Arabia\u00a0Pavilion<\/p>\n<p>Designed by <a href=\"https:\/\/archinect.com\/fosterandpartners\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Foster + Partners<\/a> in collaboration with <a href=\"https:\/\/archinect.com\/firms\/cover\/149966476\/squint-opera\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Journey<\/a>, the Saudi Arabia Pavilion was influenced by the urban footprint of Saudi towns and cities. The scheme takes the form of a \u2018village\u2019 of meandering streets with windows and doorways revealing a series of immersive spaces. Meanwhile, the massing recalls the organic shapes of Saudi villages, designed using computational fluid dynamics simulations, to allow cool winds from the west into the streets during the height of summer. It is its own urban microcosm that carefully balances tradition and heritage with modern technologies which is shaping the Kingdom\u2019s future. Image credit: Nigel Young \/ Foster + PartnersSpain\u00a0Pavilion<\/p>\n<p>Spain\u2019s pavilion for Expo 2025 was <a href=\"https:\/\/archinect.com\/news\/article\/150481678\/spain-s-expo-osaka-2025-pavilion-transports-visitors-into-the-depths-of-the-ocean\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">designed by EXTUDIO, ENORME Studio, and Smart &amp; Green Design<\/a> under the theme \u201cThe Kuroshio Current.\u201d The design of the scheme was influenced by aquatic and oceanic themes, with gentle steps that simulate sea waves leading visitors to the exhibition entrance. This space features an LED screen displaying seven video artworks that explore the symbolism of the sun.\u00a0Behind the \u201cdigital facade\u201d, the exhibition opens up along a descending ramp that evokes the sensation of a dive. Image credit: archexist<\/p>\n<p>In response to the requirement that all structures at the expo be dismantled once the exhibition ends, the pavilion was designed with future disassembly and potential\u00a0reuse\u00a0in mind. Image credit: archexistUSA\u00a0Pavilion<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/archinect.com\/news\/article\/150474603\/usa-pavilion-unveiled-ahead-of-expo-2025-in-osaka-japan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Described by its design team<\/a> as open, grand, yet minimalistic, the USA Pavilion was designed by a team consisting of New Orleans-based architecture studio\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archinect.com\/trahanarchitects\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Trahan Architects<\/a>, entertainment agency BRC Imagination Arts, and design-build contractors Alchemy and ES Global. The 32,000-square-foot\u00a0pavilion\u00a0features two triangular buildings that form a central plaza and serve as expansive wings with LED screens depicting iconic and dynamic images of American landmarks and landscapes.
