In her album West End Girl, Lily Allen got candid about where her open relationship with ex-husband David Harbour went wrong<\/a> but she\u2019s not the only celebrity who has talked about practicing non-monogamy.<\/p>\n

In the celebrity world, stars from Jada Pinkett Smith to Dolly Parton have talked about having open relationships with varying results. While some might swear by it, others have said it didn\u2019t work for them but they\u2019ve all, in one way or another, worked to break the stigma around it.<\/p>\n

Open relationships, ethical non-monogamy and polyamory all have different meanings and different parameters depending on who you ask.\u00a0Keep in mind, there are a bunch of different types of non-monogamous relationships out there, but the two most well-known are simply known as a \u201cpolyamorous relationship\u201d<\/a> and an \u201copen relationship.\u201d<\/p>\n

Open relationships are about exploring all kinds of different connections with people, whether it be romantic, sexual, or otherwise, per Live Bold & Bloom<\/a>. And polyamory is more often about exploring multiple romantic or sexual relationships, depending on your arrangements.<\/p>\n

And before we continue, let\u2019s talk about a huge misconception. Polyamory<\/a> and open relationships<\/a> are not the same as cheating. These arrangements between multiple people are all consensual and all about communication.<\/p>\n

Now that we got that out of the way, let\u2019s talk about the A-listers who\u2019ve opened up about these relationships.<\/p>\n

While there have been more high-profile open relationships like with Elliot Page, Kate Mara and Max Minghella, many celebrities have chosen to keep their multiple partners away from the public eye (but will divulge some details about the arrangements)!<\/p>\n

In her 2025 album, West End Girl, Lily Allen sang about the downfall of her marriage to David Harbour<\/a>, hinting that the actor broke the rules of their \u201copen\u201d relationship.<\/p>\n

Across the album, Allen calls her partner a \u201csex addict\u201d who led a \u201cdouble life\u201d and \u201cwent astray\u201d from their relationship. \u201c\u2018Why aren\u2019t we f\u2014ing, baby?\u2019 Yeah, that\u2019s what you said,\u201d she sings in \u201cSleepwalking.\u201d \u201cBut you let me think it was me in my head, and nothing to do with them girls in your bed.\u201d<\/p>\n

In \u201cMadeline,\u201d Allen sings about having an \u201carrangement\u201d with the Stranger Things actor and discusses the rules they laid out: \u201cBe discreet and don\u2019t be blatant. There had to be payment. It had to be with strangers.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

She hints that her partner took things too far, singing, \u201cIs it just sex or is there emotion?\u201d<\/p>\n

Page revealed that<\/a> they had a brief romance, that Minghella was fully aware of, while 2014\u2019s X-Men: Days of Future Past, prior to Page\u2019s 2020 transition.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI think my relationship, or whatever you want to call it with Kate, very much encapsulates a certain dynamic that I consistently found myself in, which was falling for people that \u2014 I think a lot of us do this \u2014 who aren\u2019t fully available,\u201d he wrote.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In the book, Page claims that Mara said:\u00a0 \u201cI never thought I could be in love with two people and now I know I can.\u2019\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Mara and Minghella\u2019s four year romance fizzled out shortly after Page and Mara\u2019s fling ended.<\/p>\n

She said on her show,\u00a0The Drew Barrymore Show<\/a>,\u00a0\u201cWhen we first met, we were young and wild. I was dating [Luke], but I think he was also dating other people. Yeah, totally, it was an open relationship, we were young.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Dolly Parton explained in her new documentary for Channel 5 entitled Dolly Parton: In Her Own Words, per DailyMail<\/a>, that he and her husband of over 50 years Carl Dean have an \u201copen\u201d relationship, but not in the way you may think.<\/p>\n

\u201cShort, fat, bald or skinny \u2014 I\u2019ve had crushes on some very unusual men,\u201d she said, elaborating on why she calls men her \u201cweakness.\u201d She added, \u201cCarl knows I\u2019ll always come home and I\u2019m not having sex with these people \u2014 I\u2019m just flirting and having fun.\u201d<\/p>\n

So their open relationship isn\u2019t sexual, unlike many other open relationships we\u2019ve seen in Tinseltown. Parton ended by saying, \u201cYes, it\u2019s an open relationship<\/a>, but not sexually and I would kill him if I thought he was doing that. He would shoot me too. At the end of the day we love each other madly.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI guess you would say \u2018practiced an open marriage\u2019 in 1954, which was another lifetime,\u201d MacLaine told\u00a0People<\/a> in 2016. \u201cNo one understood it, we did. He lived in Japan basically, I lived in America working, and this and that. We\u2019d meet up, always great friends, traveled sometimes together.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI think that\u2019s the basis for a long-lasting marriage, if you really want to do such a thing,\u201d she added. \u201cI would say better to stay friends and we don\u2019t have enough time to talk about the sexuality of all. I was very open about all of that and so was he.\u201d<\/p>\n

However, once 1990 hit, she revealed they had an open marriage, and it was solely based on convenience, saying to the Evening Standard<\/a>, \u201cWe got married so that I could work [to get a permit]. What could love be? It just happened. It is an ethical and committed non-monogamy. Everyone knows what\u2019s going on,\u201d he said to Access Hollywood<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Charlie Sheen made headlines back in 2011 when he revealed that he was living with two 24-year-old girlfriends that he dubbed the \u201cgoddesses,\u201d Natalie Kenly, a graphic designer and Rachel Oberlin, an adult film star.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019ve read about the goddesses, come on. They\u2019re an international sensation. These are my girlfriends. These are the women that I love that have completed the three parts of my heart,\u201d Sheen said in an interview<\/a> with ABC News.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt seems crazy to everybody else, but for us it works,\u201d Kenly said in the same interview. The throuple seemed to have split by the end of 2011.<\/p>\n

In an April 2020 interview with the New York Times<\/a>, she talked openly about her private experiences of being in an open relationship. \u201cListen, I\u2019m someone who has experienced both an open relationship and a deeply monogamous relationship in my life, and I think we\u2019re in a day and age where there should be no rules except for the ones designed by two people in a partnership \u2014 or three people, whatever floats your boat,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

She added, \u201cBut there has to be a level of responsibility in any relationship dynamic, and that responsibility is simply honesty and communication and trust. Apart from that, it\u2019s really none of our business what people choose to do with their lives.\u201d

\u201cIf it works, you can spend a weekend with two people and you\u2019re all hanging out and having fun and smoking, and like, sharing stories up late at night,\u201d she said in a 2019 interview with Cosmopolitan<\/a>. \u201cIt\u2019s a really fun experience and I have been able to capture that a couple times, and I just love that idea. I love loving two people at once.\u201d

She talked about her relationship in a YouTube video<\/a>, saying that she was originally in a relationship with Thorne, and then their relationship grew to a throuple with the three of them. She revealed that it made her learn a lot about herself, \u201cBeing in that relationship taught me so much about myself and polyamory and openness and how close-minded the world can be \u2014 and how open-minded the world can be.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

She was in another open relationship with Jake Paul.<\/p>\n

As we said, Mod Sun was in a polyamorous relationship with Tana Mongeau and Bella Thorne. While he hasn\u2019t spoken openly about the throuple, he did talk about his monogamous relationship with Thorne after he and Mongeau broke it off.<\/p>\n

Oscar-winning actress Mo\u2019Nique has also been up front about her marriage to husband Sidney Hicks. In an August 2007 profile, the Precious actress told the New York Times<\/a> that she and Hicks \u201chave an agreement that we\u2019ll always be honest, and if sex happens with another person, that\u2019s not a deal breaker for us, that\u2019s not something where we\u2019ll have to say, \u2018Oh God, we\u2019ve got to go to divorce court because you cheated on me.\u2019 Because we don\u2019t cheat.\u201d<\/p>\n

The actress further reiterated her stance during an appearance on Oprah Winfrey\u2019s talk show<\/a>. \u201cWhen I said I had an open marriage, people automatically jumped to sex. They automatically went there,\u201d she said. \u201cBut I\u2019ve been best friends with my husband since we were 14 years old. When we say open, we\u2019re very honest. There are no secrets. Oftentimes you have people that are married, but they\u2019re strangers, and we refuse to be those people.\u201d<\/p>\n

She said, \u201cI love men and women equally, and so I would definitely want one man, one woman. I feel like I could be polyfidelitous with those two people. I\u2019m not the kind of person that is constantly looking for new sexual experiences.\u201d

Probably one of the most well-known couples who have dabbled in an open relationship is Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith. Along with talking about it on\u00a0Red Table Talk with her daughter Willow, Jada talked about their open agreement during a 2013 interview with HuffPost Live<\/a>. \u201cI\u2019ve always told Will, \u2018You can do whatever you want as long as you can look at yourself in the mirror and be OK,\u2019 because at the end of the day, Will is his own man,\u201d she said. \u201cI\u2019m here as his partner, but he is his own man. He has to decide who he wants to be and that\u2019s not for me to do for him. Or vice versa.\u201d<\/p>\n

Will spoke about it nearly a decade before in 2005 to DailyMail<\/a>, saying,\u00a0\u201cYou\u2019re going to be attracted to people. Probably the most well-known celebrity who\u2019s open about their experiences with polyamory is Nico Tortorella. Tortoella and their partner Bethany C. Meyers have been in a polyamorous relationship, and have spoken openly about it over the years. They explained to Out<\/a> about their setup, saying, \u201cI am kind of a serial monogamist in my polyamory. \u2018ve explained this term before, but it\u2019s a lot of fancy words jumbled together for, I love dating one person at a time. I\u2019m married, yes, but I love dating one person at a time. I have a partner in LA that I\u2019ve had for a long time, but I\u2019m not his only partner; he\u2019s not my only partner.<\/p>\n

Neil Gaiman and his ex-wife Amanda Palmer were in an open marriage for years. Towards the beginning of their marriage, they kept things open, but per DailyMail<\/a>, Palmer ended the non-monogamy when their son turned four. They divorced in 2022.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Ezra Miller revealed in a 2018 interview with Playboy Magazine, via Teen Vogue<\/a>, that they were practicing nonmonogamy with a close cirlce of friends who they referred to as a \u201cpolycule\u201d \u2014 a term that combines \u201cpolyamorous\u201d and \u201cmolecule.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m trying to find queer beings who understand me as a queer being off the bat, who I make almost a familial connection with, and I feel like I\u2019m married to them 25 lifetimes ago from the moment we meet,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd then they are in the squad \u2014 the polycule. And I know they\u2019re going to love everyone else in the polycule because we\u2019re in the polycule, and we love each other so much.\u201d<\/p>\n

Before I didn\u2019t f***ing know what I was. I was meeting people and learning\u2026 by meeting them and talking about sexuality and gender, I [was] going, \u2018Oh my f***ing God, maybe I\u2019m this, if I\u2019m going to be f***ing close to anything on the spectrum.’\u201d<\/p>\n

Silicon Valley\u00a0star Thomas Middleditch didn\u2019t know that he wanted to be polygamous until after he married his wife Mollie Gates in 2015, he told\u00a0Playboy years later. He then goes on to explain that his wife was willing to work with him, but that they\u2019ve maintained a dynamic of push and pull, where he always wants more openness and she always wants less. As of 2020, Gates has filed for divorce.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know how much I can say, because I don\u2019t want my wife to be mad at me,\u201d Middleditch said in Sept. 2019. \u201cOnly after I got married was I like, \u2018Mollie, I\u2019m sorry, but we have to get nontraditional here.\u2019 To her credit, instead of saying \u2018Fuck you, I\u2019m out,\u2019 she was like, \u2018Let\u2019s figure this out.\u2019 To be honest, swinging has saved our marriage. We have different speeds, and we argue over it constantly, but it\u2019s better than feeling unheard and alone and that you have to scurry in the shadows.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe marriage could have broken apart at any time those first 10 years, if one of us had, say, fallen in love with somebody, but we never did,\u201d she said, per People<\/a>. \u201cThat was never part of it. Both of us really wanted to be together.
