When the\u00a0Indiana Fever\u00a0added future Hall of Famer\u00a0DeWanna Bonner\u00a0to their roster ahead of the 2025 WNBA season, it marked a statement of intent.<\/p>\n
Bonner, who recently became the league\u2019s third-leading scorer all-time, was still playing at an extremely high level and it signaled that, along with several new faces, the Fever and Caitlin Clark were ready to chase a championship.<\/p>\n
But things quickly went south. New head coach Stephania White, who had previously coached Bonner in Connecticut, didn\u2019t play the star forward as much as she\u2019d hoped.<\/p>\n
And Bonner eventually took a leave of absence<\/a> from the team for what she referred to as \u201cpersonal reasons.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI haven\u2019t had a lot of conversations with [Bonner] recently,\u201d White said, per an X post from Chloe Peterson of IndyStar. \u201cYou know, really focused on the team we have right here, and what we need to do to position ourselves to win.\u201d<\/p>\n Shortly after, the two sides cut ties.<\/p>\n \u201cI want to sincerely thank the Indiana Fever for the opportunity to be part of the Fever franchise,\u201d the veteran player said in a news release. \u201cDespite our shared goals and excitement heading into the season, I felt the fit did not work out\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n Bonner later signed for the Phoenix Mercury to play alongside fianc\u00e9e Alyssa Tomas. The Mercury reached the WNBA Finals, knocking out the Fever along the way, before falling to the Las Vegas Aces.<\/p>\n Indiana Fever Player Lexie Hull Still Isn\u2019t Over DeWanna Bonner\u2019s Betrayal<\/p>\n Understandably, Indiana fans were not very happy with Bonner and the way she left the organization. They relentlessly booed her<\/a> during the playoff series between the two teams, and Fever player Sophie Cunningham revealed Bonner never reached out<\/a> to her former teammates after leaving.<\/p>\n Now, it appears that Indiana players are\u00a0still\u00a0not over the breakup.<\/p>\n \u201cI was super, super, super excited because finally there\u2019s a [player in my position] that I can look up to that has won in the league and has all these accomplishments and knows what it takes, and I can learn something from her,\u201d Fever forward Lexie Hull said in an interview with Glamour<\/a>. \u201cAnd then she randomly leaves, and we\u2019re all just kind of like, \u2018What happened?\u2019 We were never given an explanation.<\/p>\n \u201cTo have no explanation was really challenging, but I think that helped us grow closer together because we\u2019re like, \u2018All right, this is us. We\u2019re here. We\u2019re going to support each other. We\u2019re loving each other. We\u2019re going to fight for each other. We\u2019re not going to leave. We\u2019re in this together.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n Meanwhile, Thomas is still fully supporting her fianc\u00e9e.<\/p>\n In a post on X, one fan wrote, \u201cIf that lady ever decides to tell her story, it\u2019s a lot of people that\u2019s gonna wish they had shut the f\u2014 up.\u201d<\/p>\n
