Gucci Mane<\/a> and his wife Keyshia Ka\u2019oir recently had a candid conversation about his mental health<\/a> journey.<\/p>\n

The rapper\u2019s new book,\u00a0Episodes: The Diary of a Recovering Mad Man<\/a>,\u00a0was released on\u00a0October 14. According to\u00a0People<\/a>, Gucci Mane reveals that he\u2019s been living with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. The book detailed that he\u2019s experienced periods of paranoia and hearing voices.<\/p>\n

Recently, Gucci Mane and his wife appeared on The Breakfast Club<\/a>, where they talked about how they protect his mental health.<\/p>\n

How does Gucci Mane manage his schizophrenia and bipolar diagnoses?<\/p>\n

During the interview, the married couple openly discussed the work they\u2019ve been doing to support Gucci Mane\u2019s mental health since his diagnoses<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have a system,\u201d Ka\u2019oir shared, according to People. \u201cI take his apps off his phone. First thing I do, I delete Instagram. I delete everything. Even if I gotta change his password, I\u2019m changing it because I don\u2019t need the public to know he\u2019s having an episode.\u201d<\/p>\n

She also explained how she recognizes the signs and keeps treatment appointments as part of their routine.<\/p>\n

\u201cI control that.\u00a0You\u2019re not going on Instagram,\u00a0you\u2019re not going on Twitter,\u00a0it\u2019s deleted.\u00a0I control everything at home,\u201d she said. \u201cNow, before the episodes come, I catch it. That\u2019s why he hasn\u2019t had another one.\u00a0How you catch it is he doesn\u2019t speak to you,\u00a0he wants to be left alone,\u00a0he\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0eat,\u00a0he\u00a0does not\u00a0sleep.\u00a0Text messages, there\u2019s a period after each word.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gucci Mane chimed in, saying that when he had episodes, he would hear voices in his head.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re kind of like in a warped world,\u201d he\u00a0shared<\/a>. \u201cIt\u2019s a psychosis. You know what I\u2019m saying?\u00a0You\u00a0dealing\u00a0with stuff, like you hearing voices.\u201d<\/p>\n

When did Gucci Mane get serious about his mental health?<\/p>\n

Gucci Mane says his turning point came in 2020.\u00a0He\u00a0stated that a severe episode early in the\u00a0pandemic<\/a>\u00a0forced\u00a0him\u00a0to stop hiding and commit to real care.<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter that, I was like, man, I got to really just hold myself accountable and take care of my health. I don\u2019t ever want to have an episode again,\u201d\u00a0he\u00a0said, according to People. \u201cIf I have to see a therapist, if I have to take medicine\u2026 I kinda threw the towel in, like, do what I need to do to get better.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gucci Mane added that Keyshia was expecting their son at the time, which sharpened the stakes at home and made him rethink what fatherhood would look like if he ignored his mental health.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t want to raise a family, and then my mental health is gone. What if I have an episode I can\u2019t come back from?\u201d he said. \u201cSo I just started to do the work, started seeking the help.\u201d<\/p>\n

From there, Gucci Mane put a plan in motion. He started therapy, followed medical guidance on medication and learned to spot what sets him off \u2014 naming stress and substance use as key triggers. Today, he says the structure is working and that he is not experiencing episodes. The mindset is as\u00a0important\u00a0as the tools.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u00a0got\u00a0to do the work yourself if you want to really get better,\u201d he said. \u201cPeople can want it for you, but you still\u00a0got\u00a0to want it more than they do.\u201d<\/p>\n
