As the 2025 NASCAR season nears its end, former Cup Series<\/a> driver and current Fox Sports analyst Kevin Harvick has reignited debate over the fairness of the sport\u2019s playoff system. On his Harvick Happy Hour podcast<\/a>, Harvick expressed frustration that NASCAR\u2019s current championship format can punish season-long dominance, especially in cases like Corey Heim<\/a> and Connor Zilisch<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Kevin Harvick Points to Heim and Zilisch as Examples of Unfairness<\/p>\n

Both drivers have been nearly unstoppable this year, Heim with 10 wins in 22 Truck Series starts and Zilisch matching that total across 28 Xfinity Series races. Yet despite those records, both risk missing out on their respective championships because of the one-race, winner-take-all structure.<\/p>\n

Harvick didn\u2019t hold back. He said that if Heim doesn\u2019t win the Truck title, it would be \u201ca nuclear meltdown,\u201d adding that it shouldn\u2019t even be a debate who the champions are in Trucks or Xfinity, given how dominant Heim and Zilisch have been.<\/p>\n

He argued that the current system makes it possible for a driver with only one win to beat someone who has dominated all season, something he called \u201can embarrassment\u201d for the sport. Harvick said he\u2019d be \u201cdevastated\u201d if Heim lost after such a historic run, emphasizing that NASCAR\u2019s playoff structure doesn\u2019t properly value the points earned throughout the year.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf we\u2019re going to have playoffs,\u201d Harvick said<\/a>, \u201cyou better make the points matter as much as possible. These guys shouldn\u2019t lose a full season\u2019s championship to someone with a single win. Something small or random shouldn\u2019t decide a title. Harvick went on to compare NASCAR\u2019s system to other major sports, noting that when a lower-seeded team beats a higher-seeded one, there\u2019s usually a series or a larger sample size that determines the better team. NASCAR, on the other hand, decides everything in one race, something he believes makes the outcome far too random.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s why there has to be a bigger sample size,\u201d Harvick continued<\/a>. \u201cThey don\u2019t like one race determining it. I don\u2019t care if it\u2019s the last four or last three, but this one-race format doesn\u2019t reflect what happens over a full season.\u201d<\/p>\n

He also pushed back on the argument that the playoff format improves ratings. NASCAR\u2019s so-called \u201cGame 7 moment,\u201d he said, hasn\u2019t delivered the kind of excitement or growth that was promised when the system was introduced. \u201cThat one-race championship moment has done absolutely zero to make it more exciting,\u201d Harvick said.<\/p>\n
