\n\tFrankie Muniz<\/a> revealed during an episode of \u201cThe Joe Vulpis Podcast\u201d last month that he has not spoken to Hilary Duff<\/a> in the 22 years since they starred in \u201cAgent Cody Banks<\/a>\u201d together (via Pe<\/a>ople). Muniz blamed Duff\u2019s mother for creating a split between the two young actors after she allegedly interfered in the movie\u2019s casting process and went behind Muniz\u2019s back to get Duff cast as the female lead in the action comedy.<\/p>\n

\n\tMuniz and Duff met as teenagers as their careers took off around the same time, with Duff\u2019s Disney Channel series \u201cLizzie McGuire\u201d premiering in 2001 and Muniz\u2019s Fox sitcom \u201cMalcom in the Middle\u201d debuting in 2002. Muniz even cameoed as himself on Duff\u2019s series.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWe became really, really good friends. We had a really great relationship for a long time,\u201d Muniz remembered. \u201cI was on the set of\u00a0\u2018Lizzie McGuire,\u2019\u00a0and I was in Hilary\u2019s dressing room and her mom was there\u2026 Her mom was like, \u2018Do you know what you\u2019re doing this summer? What are you doing this summer?\u2019 And I go, \u2018Oh, I\u2019m filming this movie where I\u2019m playing like a junior James Bond.’\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tMuniz said he told Duff\u2019s mom all about \u201cAgent Cody Banks,\u201d and she allegedly responded by asking if the movie had a female lead yet. According to Muniz, the production was already interested in casting \u201cSmallville\u201d star Kristin Kreuk opposite him, and he \u201creally thought\u201d Cody\u2019s love interest, Natalie Connors, would be played by her when he read the script. Plans suddenly changed, however. Muniz said the next time he spoke to Duff\u2019s mother (which was the very next morning), she was informing him that Duff had already been cast.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cHer mom\u2019s like, \u2018Guess what? We\u2019re going to be spending the summer together\u2026 she\u2019s doing\u00a0\u201cCody Banks\u201d\u00a0with you\u2026 They signed the contract last night,\u2019\u201d Muniz said, adding that he was shocked and remembered thinking: \u201cThe movie you knew nothing about yesterday?\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tMuniz was surprised because he thought he was at a point in his career where he would have pull with the studio when it came to finding his \u201cAgent Cody Banks\u201d co-star. He called his agents, who confirmed that \u201ccalls were made\u201d about casting Duff in the role. The agents \u201cjust assumed it was fine\u201d since he was already close with Duff, as proven by his cameo on \u201cLizzie McGuire.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cNeedless to say, I wasn\u2019t thrilled about it. And not because I didn\u2019t want it to be Hilary,\u201d Muniz said. \u201cI don\u2019t know how much I want to say. I\u2019m trying to think about it because I\u2019ve already said way too much.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cAgent Cody Banks\u201d ultimately went into production with Muniz and Duff as the leads, with Muniz saying: \u201cI was very sad when Hilary\u2019s mom would come on set\u2026 And if I told you I\u2019ve never talked to Hilary since the last day of filming. I\u2019ve not said one word to her since then. So that\u2019s the truth of that. No one knows about my Hilary Duff story.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tMuniz then got honest by sharing the guilt he feels for not having continued his friendship with Duff just because of what her mother allegedly did to him by going behind his back.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI regret not just continuing to be friends with her because we had a great friendship for such a long time, and I let her mom\u2026 it pissed me off,\u201d Muniz said. \u201cI would love to catch up with her [in the future]. I would love to even talk about that because I\u2019m sure she doesn\u2019t know any of that happened.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cAgent Cody Banks,\u201d directed by Harald Zwart, opened in theaters in March 2003 from MGM and grossed nearly $60 million worldwide. Muniz played the title role, a 15-year-old teenager who goes undercover for the CIA as a super-spy. The supporting cast featured Angie Harmon, Keith David and Ian McShane. Muniz returned for the 2004 sequel, \u201cAgent Cody Banks 2: Destination London,\u201d but Duff did not.<\/p>\n
