BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WBNG) — Local officials and members of the Binghamton police department got together today to announce details of a partnership to expand local mental health crisis response. <\/p>\n
The new vision was announced for mental health response and crisis response throughout Broome County and the City of Binghamton.<\/p>\n
$100,000 in funding for the project was included in the City of Binghamton\u2019s 2026 budget plan, and an additional $400,000 as been allocated by Broome County to support the new system. <\/p>\n
The system will allow county residents to connect with mental health professionals who will work alongside law enforcement during times of crisis. <\/p>\n
Broome County Executive Jason Garnar spoke about the importance of the new service. <\/p>\n
\u201cFor years, our community has faced growing mental health challenges, and the need for timely crisis response has never been better. So this is a new coordinated system. It\u2019ll help ensure that when somebody is experiencing a mental health crisis, then they\u2019re gonna get the right kind of help right away, said Garnar<\/p>\n
According to Mayor Kraham, the system expands on an existing initiative, but will allow more people to have access to the potentially life-saving resource. <\/p>\n
The countywide mental health crisis response system will go into effect in 2026. <\/p>\n
