Colin Farrell<\/a> shared a particularly embarrassing memory Tuesday on \u201cThe Late Show with Stephen Colbert<\/a>\u201d from his time filming \u201cMinority Report<\/a>\u201d opposite Tom Cruise<\/a> \u2014 who apparently \u201cwasn\u2019t very happy\u201d about what happened.<\/p>\n

\u201cI also had one of the worst days I\u2019ve ever had on a film set,\u201d Farrell recalled<\/a>, adding: \u201cIt was my birthday on May 31st, and we were shooting, and I begged production \u2014 who did I think I was? \u2014 of a $120 million film if they would not have me working on my birthday.\u201d<\/p>\n

Farrell was a rising star when he was cast in Steven Spielberg<\/a>\u2019s 2002 blockbuster, while Cruise was already a Hollywood legend with a reputation for sheer professionalism on set. Farrell had yet to find sobriety, leading to an apparent all-night birthday bender.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo of course my pickup was 6 a.m. on May 31st, and I got up to all sorts of nonsense the night before,\u201d he said Tuesday. \u201cAnd I remember getting into bed, and as soon as I turned off the light, the phone rang, and it was the driver outside who said, \u2018It\u2019s 10 past 6.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd I went, \u2018Oh, shit,\u2019\u201d Farrell said.<\/p>\n

The actor was apparently so hungover that assistant director David H. Venghaus Jr. said he \u201ccan\u2019t go to the set like this.\u201d The Irish actor recalled asking for six Pacifico beers and a pack of Marlboro Reds.<\/p>\n

\u201cNow listen, it\u2019s not cool, because two years later I went to rehab, right?\u201d Farrell told Colbert\u2019s audience. \u201cBut it worked in the moment! All the holy people that we should look to for the answers on how to live a life would say the present is all that counts.\u201d<\/p>\n

But maybe it didn\u2019t work so well in the moment, either, because Farrell said he was completely flummoxed while filming opposite Cruise and couldn\u2019t deliver his opening line for the scene: \u201cI\u2019m sure you\u2019ve all grasped the fundamental paradox of pre-crime methodology.\u201d<\/p>\n

Farrell recalled desperately forging ahead despite a crew member suggesting he catch some air. He then revealed just how long it took him to get the line right, recalling, \u201cIt took 46 takes.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cTom wasn\u2019t very happy with me,\u201d he said. \u201cTom, who I love, was not very happy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Farrell admitted in 2008<\/a> that he was \u201cdrunk and high for 16 years\u201d before checking into rehab for drug and alcohol abuse in 2005. He has been sober ever since \u2014 and was nominated for an Oscar<\/a> in 2023.<\/p>\n
