{"id":250178,"date":"2025-10-30T13:40:08","date_gmt":"2025-10-30T13:40:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/250178\/"},"modified":"2025-10-30T13:40:08","modified_gmt":"2025-10-30T13:40:08","slug":"most-watched-horror-halloween-films-since-2021","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/250178\/","title":{"rendered":"Most-Watched Horror\/Halloween Films Since 2021"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cM3GAN 2.0\u201d might not have been a box office success, but it was the first horror movie many viewers turned to as the Halloween season begun this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAccording to a special <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nielsen.com\/insights\/2025\/halloween-2025-horror-movie-trends\/\" target=\"_blank\">Hallowee<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nielsen.com\/insights\/2025\/halloween-2025-horror-movie-trends\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">n<\/a><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nielsen.com\/insights\/2025\/halloween-2025-horror-movie-trends\/\" target=\"_blank\"> report<\/a> from <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/nielsen\/\" id=\"auto-tag_nielsen\" data-tag=\"nielsen\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nielsen<\/a> summarizing horror movie viewership each October since 2021, the \u201cM3GAN\u201d sequel was the most-watched horror film on TV during the week of Oct. 1-7, with a total of 115 million viewing minutes on Peacock. (Data for the rest of this month is not yet available.) That statistic was counted across a combination of linear and streaming. Just behind it with 113 million minutes watched was the original \u201cScream\u201d film from 1996, which aired on the Paramount Network and Showtime in addition to being available on multiple streamers. <\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"c-lazy-image__img lrv-u-background-color-grey-lightest lrv-u-width-100p lrv-u-display-block lrv-u-height-auto\" src=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/wp-content\/themes\/pmc-variety-2020\/assets\/public\/lazyload-fallback.gif\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image_ec8954.png\" alt=\"\" data-lazy- data-lazy- height=\"576\" width=\"1024\" decoding=\"async\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAlong with \u201cM3GAN 2.0,\u201d the horror titles that premiered in 2025 and made the chart are \u201cBring Her Back\u201d at No. 3, \u201c28 Years Later\u201d at No. 4 and \u201cSinners\u201d at No. 8. And besides \u201cScream,\u201d the only chart titles that premiered before the last decade are 1962\u2019s \u201cWhatever Happened to Baby Jane?\u201d at No. 5 and 1990\u2019s \u201cTremors\u201d at No. 7.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe only titles from the 2025 chart that also appeared on one of Nielsen\u2019s charts of the most-watched horror films in Octobers 2021-2024 are \u201cScream\u201d and 2018\u2019s \u201cHalloween.\u201d \u201cScream\u201d charted once before, reaching No. 3 in 2021 with 458 million minutes watched across AMC and IFC. \u201cHalloween\u201d made No. 8 in 2021 with 362 million minutes watched on FX, No. 8 in 2024 with 370 million minutes watched across Netflix and Peacock and No. 9 in 2025 with 50 million minutes watched on Hulu.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"c-lazy-image__img lrv-u-background-color-grey-lightest lrv-u-width-100p lrv-u-display-block lrv-u-height-auto\" src=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/wp-content\/themes\/pmc-variety-2020\/assets\/public\/lazyload-fallback.gif\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image_2b60e4.png\" alt=\"\" data-lazy- data-lazy- height=\"576\" width=\"1024\" decoding=\"async\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tBetween 2021 and 2024, repeat titles include the original 1978 \u201cHalloween,\u201d \u201cThir13en Ghosts\u201d and \u201cHouse of Wax,\u201d which all charted in 2021 and 2022; \u201cHubie Halloween,\u201d \u201cwhich charted in 2022 and 2023; and the 2023 \u201cHaunted Mansion\u201d remake, which charted in 2023 and 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tNielsen also broke down horror viewership in Octobers 2021-2024 by demographic, taking a closer look at patterns in Hispanic, Black and Asian audiences as well as six different age groups. From 2022 to 2024, there were no differences across racial lines. \u201cCurse of Bridge Hollow\u201d was No. 1 for Hispanic, Black and Asian viewers in 2022, though it came in second after \u201cHalloween Ends\u201d with viewers of all races includes, per the chart above. In 2023 and 2024, the top title in these groups matched the top title overall: \u201cHaunted Mansion\u201d in 2023 and \u201cDon\u2019t Move\u201d in 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t In 2021, however, Hispanic viewers gravitated to \u201cI Am Legend\u201d while the most-watched horror film among Black viewers was \u201cLife\u201d and \u201cNight Teeth\u201d was No. 1 among Asians. Of those, only \u201cNight Teeth\u201d made 2021\u2019s overall Top 10. <\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"c-lazy-image__img lrv-u-background-color-grey-lightest lrv-u-width-100p lrv-u-display-block lrv-u-height-auto\" src=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/wp-content\/themes\/pmc-variety-2020\/assets\/public\/lazyload-fallback.gif\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image_9778c8.png\" alt=\"\" data-lazy- data-lazy- height=\"576\" width=\"1024\" decoding=\"async\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tSimilarly to the data regarding racial demographics, 2021 saw five different top titles across the six age groups, but horror viewing became more homogenous over time. In 2022 and 2024, there were three top titles across the groups; in 2023, there was only one.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tHorror movies made up 14.7% of all movie viewing in October 2021, before dipping just slightly to 14.6% in 2022 and ultimately peaking with 15.8% in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"c-lazy-image__img lrv-u-background-color-grey-lightest lrv-u-width-100p lrv-u-display-block lrv-u-height-auto\" src=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/wp-content\/themes\/pmc-variety-2020\/assets\/public\/lazyload-fallback.gif\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image_1441fc.png\" alt=\"\" data-lazy- data-lazy- height=\"576\" width=\"1024\" decoding=\"async\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tWhile Nielsen didn\u2019t provide a data point comparing those percentages to horror viewership outside of the Halloween season, its sister company Gracenote has measured that as of September 2025, horror makes up 7.43% of movie viewership overall across Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV+, Disney+, Netflix and Paramount+.
