{"id":250451,"date":"2025-10-30T16:45:09","date_gmt":"2025-10-30T16:45:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/250451\/"},"modified":"2025-10-30T16:45:09","modified_gmt":"2025-10-30T16:45:09","slug":"ontario-bill-banning-speed-cameras-passes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/250451\/","title":{"rendered":"Ontario bill banning speed cameras passes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The Ford government has passed a controversial omnibus bill banning municipalities from installing speed cameras. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/news.ontario.ca\/en\/release\/1006626\/province-introducing-legislation-to-protect-ontario-by-building-a-more-competitive-economy\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bill 56<\/a>, the \u201cBuilding a More Competitive Economy Act,\u201d was introduced on Oct. 20, with the government saying it would reduce red tape. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The large bill also included a provision to ban speed cameras, which Premier Doug Ford has called \u201ca cash grab,\u201d despite vigorous opposition from groups who say the devices improve safety. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cp24.com\/politics\/queens-park\/2025\/10\/28\/ford-government-to-limit-debate-skip-public-hearings-on-bill-to-scrap-speed-cameras\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">bill was fast-tracked<\/a> through the legislature, with the government limiting public consultations and debate. It was introduced for third reading Wednesday and was voted on in the legislature Thursday afternoon. THE CANADIAN PRESS\/Jon Blacker <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The government has said it will instead focus on \u201calternative traffic-calming measures,\u201d such as speed bumps, speed cushions and roundabouts, as well as enhanced signage and education campaigns. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">While the bill has passed, it still needs royal ascent to become law.
